Ruger's NEW rifle -- The "Gunsite Scout Rifle."

http://www.ruger.com/products/gunsit...le/models.html

What do you guys think about it? Looks to be an interesting .308 rifle. MSRP of $995.00. I wonder if its worth it

Also, what does it mean to be "gunsite approved?"

That would be the Gunsite shooting academy.

I wonder what magazines these rifles use, something commonly available or a proprietory Ruger design. Looks like something that will sell rather well.

I hope it uses M14 mags and not some uber rare and pricey Ruger proprietary magazines that they can decide to keep back or sell to the mere mortals on a whim like they did with the Mini magazines.

It kind of looks like one, however I think they would have been advertising it if it was, all it says on the website is "Ten Round Detachable Box Magazine with Mini-14 type Push Forward Release"

Sounds like a pricey magazine.

It means they get to increase the MSRP.

If you want a bolt gun buy a bolt gun. If you want a semi auto buy a semi auto. I don't see the point in trying to mix the two...

On the one hand, it's good that Ruger is willing to try new things.

OTOH, they don't quite get the Scout concept. The stock is too heavy, the magazine is ridiculous and the extra length the flash hider takes up would be better used by a longer barrel. And where's the third sling attachment?

Sling attachement

Nat,

Yeah, they missed out on the middle sling stud... luckily I sell them when I make Ching Slings for folks who need them!

From the specs, they got it pretty close, even with the wood stock.

As far as the stock and the mag, I'd be willing to bet we see a couple of quality after market stocks using more common and cheaper mags available before to long.

Hey, its new, and looks like it could be a good base, as long as its reasonably accurate.

Ive shot a few 16" barreled .308's. I think youre going to want to leave that on there.

Yea, Savage did too. You'd think since they were calling it a "scout", they'd understand the concept and address it.

Cool

Cool - that's the sort of gun i always wished they'd make. you could use it for hunting, but it would be a fun sort of SHTF gun too.

It looks like you can remove the rear sight and mount a normal set of Ruger scope rings on it if you want a traditional scope setup.

Would have liked a threaded barrel so I could put what I want on the end of it, or nothing to keep it short.

Really would have liked it to take the $2 HK 91 mags that are out there now! Plus, you can get the short 5rd versions for that also.

I'm not a scout guy but it just looks like a modified Ruger Laminate Compact rifle. Looks like a little heavier barrel with rail, peep and fron shight post and flash suppressor off of the Mini, Plus the trigger guard with magazine adds another 1lb over the compact weight. I really like the compact model Ruger offers for a hunting rifle, just wish they offered it in a .338 Fed or .358 Win as that is what I'm looking for.

Probably only be around a few years like the Frontier model they had a few years ago. Scout rifles are a niche market and they don't sell the best, but Ruger managed to keep the MSRP under $1000 and only about $100 more than the laminated compact model. I'm sure you can find this rifle if you look for less than MSRP so that will help.

They probably added it on to get the barrel back to a legal length. The barrel is only 16.5" so I'll bet that flash suppressor is a permanent one much like the M4 civilian AR15 rifles have.

Makes me wish I'd kept my Jungle Carbine, which was a thing of beauty, relatively speaking.

Doesn't do much for me. I think you could build a simular rifle for that price and probably be much happier with the build. My state doesn'y allow more than a 5 round mag capacity either so it wouldn't work for me.

This rifle is legal in Oregon, your fireams magazine restrictions only apply to semi-auto rifles so this being a bolt action is completly legal.

Barely in the scout rifle spec

Weight is given as 7 lbs, this is without scope. Flash suppressor is threaded on, so it can be removed in favor of better designed things to screw on the end.

Price seems OK given what other scout rifles seem to run.

Legal length on a rifle is 16". Shotguns are 18".

Maybe, maybe not.

Ive done a couple on a couple of different platforms, and by the time you get through doing the R&D, time spent assembling it, fooling with it, and/or paying someone to do what you cant, it can add up pretty quick, and you still might not have a shooter.

It looks like Ruger has done a little more research into it than Savage, and taken it further down the road. Since it is just coming out, Im sure it will probably get tweaked down the road too.

I know 16" is the legal length on a rifle. I was just going by what DPMS did with my AP4 that I had. Barrel was 14.5" with a 2" permanent flash suppressor on it to get it back to legal length. Most rifle manufacturers don't like to cut everthing down right at 16" they like a little room.

Right. I have a couple of rifles that have welded on FH/Brakes due to barrels being short too, but thats not the case here. The Rugers "barrel" is listed as 16.5".

Hmmm, looks like Ruger re-invented the FR8. It does look more like a Scout Rifle than some of the others I have seen, and Ruger builds a good rifle.
