223 loads for son-in-laws' stocking stuffers
223 loads for stocking stuffers for son-in-laws
One son-in-law has AR 15 in 1:7 twist. The other has a Mini-14 in 1:9 twist. What bullet would you suggest for me to handload (I have H335 or Benchmark powders) so I can stuff their stocking with range ammo this Christmas? Looking for an economical bullet that would function well in both rifles for informal plinking. |

The 7" twist is for heavier target ammo. The only bullets that pop into mind as easily compatible with both the 7 and 9 and the slower of your two powders are the 77 grain Sierra MatchKings, but those are not economy bullets. Of course, if it's truly just plinking, overstabilizing something a bit light won't matter that much unless they go so fast they come apart from the excess spin. Perhaps the flat base 60 grain Hornady hollow point would be a good compromise?

Hornady 55gr FMJ in bulk are priced pretty well. If you want a step up from plinking ammo try the 55gr or 60gr Hornady VMax.

I agree, a 60 grain VMax is a pretty great bullet for hunting most game, and atm, hornady prices are down. Check out Cabelas for some great deals on them. Id suggest a single bulk order, you get a lot more bang for your buck.
BTW, i think thats about the most thoughtful idea for a stocking stuffer i have ever heard of. Nice work! Last edited by Scratch4x4; December 7, 2009 at 05:16 PM. Reason: add to post |

Hornady 55gr fmj bulk. I use many differant powders. H335 & RL15 have shown the best accuracy for me. My best loads have been found at or very near the published Max loads. Work up to max carefully.
A wonderful stocking stuffer idea. |

These are some nice bullets. I bought 500 and will buy more. The weight should do well in both guns. I recommend Varget or H-4895 or IMR 4895 powder.

You might like these also?
69 Grains work in both twists just fine...
http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.c...ir=278|281|727 The "Accuracy Load" in Sierra's book has the H-335 powder listed for 63 grain bullets http://accurateshooter.net/Downloads/sierra223ar.pdf Never used H-335 others have said midrange weights for usage. With the fast twists the 60-63 might be the best bullet weights. Last edited by A_Gamehog; December 8, 2009 at 01:14 PM. |

H335, Hornady bulk 55 JSP or FMJ. Same load with this bullet works great in my Mini14 and my 1/8 target AR.
