Mossberg 500 help

I got a used 500 first couple shells feed and load fine. On the third one it wont come out of the mag without pumping the action several times. Can any one tell me whats happening?

Dirty magazine? Weak magazine spring? Both come to mind and are easy fixes.

Check the mag tube for dents. With the tube exposed to bumps and bruises. Occasionally a small dent will prevent the follower from moving freely past that point

I have the same thing happened. Fired 1400 rounds one day shooting skeet. I cleaned it and it work like new.

It happens. Especially if you leave it loaded for extended periods of time( Read months or years ) Pull the spring out and stretch it a little bit, see if that helps. Stretching the springs will usually get you buy until you can get a replacement spring.

These are the only two issues I've ever had with my Mossbergs.

Well it works perfect if im actually firing it. Went through 15 rounds with no problems. Only does it when I rack the slide with out firing it. Weird.

The recoil probably assists in overcoming the problem.

I agree recoil may assist getting the follower over the friction point if that is the case. I had a similar problem so I used a dowel rod to simulate loading the shells. Then I slowly pulled the dowel rod out but the magazine follower was hung up and failed to return. I removed the endcap, spring & follower and found the sticky spot inside the tube. I rammed another dowel rod with a piece of leather scrap around it through the cap end and worked out that sticky spot. Didn't take much and it was good to go. The follower moved freely all the way.

I put some oil down the mag tube and cycled 15 rounds through it. Im either short stroking the action or its dirty I think. Im going to take it to a gun smith for a cleaning. Thanks for the help everyone.

could be rust if its old. I have bought some old rusty 500's and maverick's
the magazine tube can be a pain to get off. needed to replace the spring and clean the tube. follower needed some cleaning and polishing after that was better than new.

also dont stretch springs it ruins them sure it may work for a while but after that it will go weak and need replacing. brownells,numrichs and midwayusa has replacement magazine tube springs.

If you decide to remove the mag tube yourself, there's a right way to do it.
It screws into the receiver, but might be tough to unscrew.
The only place to put pressure is at the very end, where the barrel attaches.
That's the only place where the tube is solid.
Anywhere else along the length it's hollow and easily damaged.
