CVA 1861 Navy 44, I think

Been wanting to get a cap and ball revolver for a while now and saw this at the gun shop for $75. Was told it was an 1860 Army but i think its 1861 Navy??? Anyone able to clarify? Also i need some parts for it to get it to where it can fire and need to know if Peitta parts will fit this ASM gun? Maybe with some minor fitting needed? Having trouble finding the ASM parts. I need to replace the wedge, spring, and screw; and i need to replace the trigger bolt spring.

I think the 1860 Army was 44 cal and the Navy was 36 cal..

okay, army it is! the naval scene had me confused but apparently it is on the cylinders of army and navy revolvers. I miced it and its definitely a 44. thanks glenn!

Pietta parts are too large for an ASM gun. Uberti parts are a better fit.

25 years ago, service merchandise sold a cva kit it was an 1860 army but it had a 1861 grip frame and came in .44 caliber. I still have mine, still shoots well.

I have two of these ASM Brass Frame .44s of the 1860 Colt pattern.

I needed a lot of parts for one of them. It made sense to buy the parts kit from cabela's which I think is now up to 29.99. I was able to get the spring to drop in, but the hand needed some work.

This won't make sense for you since you only need the spring and that is about seven bucks from just about anywhere. The wedge does not come with the parts kit from Cabela's.

Try Dixie Gun Works or VTI Gun Parts. The folks who say they have ASM parts actually have replacement parts made by a later manufacturer who is only trying to match the ASM specs. Very few real ASM parts left in the system. The nice thing about the two places I mentioned is that they have some pretty knowledgable folks who will talk to you. In both cases, the skirt who answers the phone is not the person who can answer your questions but the people who are more technically aware are very helpful.

I like both of mine but they took a lot of work to get them to look right.

75.00 is an okay price given that you will have some money in the parts. With shipping probably close to 25 dollars.

The wedge is also upside down and driven in too deep.

Thank you all for the helpful info, I ordered Uberti parts from VTI. And I thought that wedge looked wrong, the spring goes up and catches on the screw when you remove it right?

Yup!
I have an ASM 1861 steel "Navy" 44. It is basically an Army with Navy grips. I like it.

cold blue, cleaning with acetone, then using birchwood perma blue, clean with water and dry, hit with some steel wool, and repeat, or i may leave it as is, it does have a nice patina, well seasoned steel, it almost looks browned...still debating...any opinions?

I would do it exactly as you say but I would also consider Van's cold blue.

I get better results but it is probably a personal thing.
