TEDDY are you aware the military is refurbishing M14 for combat.
the m16 is not able to make the long range hits that are needed.
Here are just a few of the DMR M14s that recently arrived in Afghanistan.

Sniper rifles have always been an outdated previously issued service rifle. We were still using 03 Springfields in Korea and even Vietnam.

It all depends on the mission.

An assortment of tools for the troops to choose from works best.

It looks as though the M14 will continue to see limited specialized military service
for several years to come ~ making it the longest serving US battle rifle ever

Gentleman at the range today told me that the CMP was very close to selling semi-auto M-14s the same way they sell Garands, except a last-minute stink about selling rifles converted from select-fire sunk it. Does anyone have any more information on whether this happened, and the details if so?
Sometime back in the '60's I think.

For years and years, there were M14's (connector locks welded) issued to the various state associations for the purpose of loaning them out to members for Highpower competition, but the CMP pulled all those back a year or two ago.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program. It's a quasi-governmental non-profit company that promotes marksmanship and sells surplus military rifles to the general public, with some conditions.

But it isn't serving as the battle rifle. It was our service rifle for only about 8 years or so. Many troops went straight from the M1 to the M16. It is the shortest serving rifle and spent the last 45 years in mothballs, except for a few hundred here or there.

It states in the FAQ section on the CMP site that they will not be selling m14's.

Also, recently they issued a statement saying that once the M1 carbine, Garand, and 03' surplus have dried up in a few years that they would be out of business.

The M14 is our last surviving main battle rifle, though it's no longer used as an MBR.

Even though many were stored, given away and destroyed, the NAVY and special forces
kept them going all along. Today, growing numbers are being pressed back into service.

Long live the M14
