Here is my problem. I have a Ruger #1 45-70 and a Marlin 1895SS 45-70 and I want to reload for them.
I have a Dillon 550 press but Dillon does NOT offer the 45-70 dies. They do however offer the Redding 45-70 three(3) die set. Is redding a good die set for the 45-70? Will RCBS dies work on the Dillon? Does Hornady make a 45-70 die set that will fit the Dillon? What is the BEST die set money can buy? thanks |

I use a host of RCBS and Redding dies on individual tool heads for my Dillon XL 650. No problems after about 20,000 rounds of 44, 45 acp, 243 win, 338 wm, 9mm, 300 wm,et al.
IMHO Redding makes a good die set. However, there are other sets which are less expensive and MAY serve your purpose(s). Do you want to do production reloading, or just a few? Judge:
In the Dillon 550 that I have used for almost 20 years, RCBS are the only dies I have ever used. They work fine in calibers 30-06, 7.62mmNATO (.308Winchester), 45ACP, 9mmLuger, 9mm Makarov and 38pecial. Redding dies are supposed to be very good, but I have no experience with them. In the 550 press, ANY standard dies, that is 7/8 x 14 tpi should work, so far as I have been able to tell, or have heard. Hope that this helps. |
