went out to cast some more 200gr swc today
and thought i would try and see what straight SOWW would cast like
and here are some nestled in some 50/50 lube

i found it odd that they filled easy and came out all shiny
i didnt add any tin or any thing, just kept adding more SOWW
i had no idea that it would work so well
im sure they are soft as a babies bottom, but who cares in a 700fps 45 load

I know that it works great in my Peacemaker!

I have read that acp's do well on it too. (don't have one)
And SOWW is cheaper to buy, at least on the forums where I find mine. I like the stuff!

Stick On Wheel Weights are very soft.
I've thought about testing some, but have had such good results with 50/50 for hunting that I never tried it yet.

I would think they would make a good defense bullet for my 380's though and am going to try some shortly.

I made a bunch of those into ingot the other day. They sure do shine. I wondered if they would do well as an HP in a slow speed gun like the .45acp. When I get my mold from Mihec for my .45 I'll have to try some expansion tests. I noticed my regular alloy of WW and 1% tin didn't have enough velocity to expand with a previous mold I owned.

Ah, gotcha.

I just melted a bunch of window counterweights down which is the same as the SOWW. Mold fill out wasn't as pretty as regular wheel weights, so ill be adding a bit of pewter/tin.

Our local scrapper had a huge box of roof flashing a couple years ago. Should have bought it had I known it would work for 45.

.050% Sb, 3.0% Sn, .25% As, 96.3% Pb 12 listed as BHN

Roughly anyway. Should make GOOD ACP fodder for sure.

those look like clip on numbers Mike

SOWW shouldnt have any As or Sb in it
but it is all a carp shoot just like range scrap
the scrap i mine this year will be lots harder than last year
as i have dumped several hundred pounds of COWW into the berm

That is exactly clip on, instead of stick on. DUH...

Stick on is listed as (estimated) .25% Sb and 99.8% Pb and 6 listed as BHN

not that i remember, it had been sitting in a drum full of water for years, it was very dirty, i ended up smelting a second time to ensure cleanliness, it all had a weird orange coating that would sink to the bottom of the pot, pain in the rear

im going to try some of those pretty SOWWs soon, for the 357, they sure are pretty

not sure if this is what flashing is, i just kknow it came from a roof, and itsreally really soft and shiny, most of it had thick spouts that were put on with tar

Skizzums you have some pretty good stuff right there. That is the flashing portion of a lead roof vent. My last 3 scavenger hunts at the recycling center that's the first thing I look for. I've smelted this down into ingots, and put them into my bottom pour straight up with a little tin, I water drop, and after 48 hours find a BHN of about 14-ready for the 45!

Wow, that's pretty sweet. Most of them still had the vent attached, I was having a helluva time getting the stuff into the pot until I figured out you could just cut it with lawn trimmers. I can't tell ypu how many hours I spent with a sledgehammer trying to bang them into small enough pieces to fit

Yep. I use tin snips. I just cut it up into lasagna noodle size strips and ease it into the pot as needed.

(at least, the clean parts)
