Anybody understand the $600 price difference on 16 & 18 inch S&W AR10's ?

I'm planning on picking one up, can't figure out what the difference is between the standard & sport models (S&W M&P 10 .308 I'm talking) other than an 18 & 16 inch barrel respectively and the standard model also comes with a different flash hider.

Any idea? Seems like for $600 (list price difference, $1600 versus $1000) there ought to be some quality difference. Now without trying hard, when I priced out the standard model it was a whole lot below list (quoted $1070 to order it, list is $1600), so it's also possible wholesale prices on the two are a lot closer than list price and in reality what you pay isn't much different between the two models...

Thanks in advance!

Cool well let us know how you like it!

Most likely I think I'm just going to order that same model, which the price I got quoted on it apparently was very good.

That's the smart way to do it!!
PSA saves you more bucks, you just have to do your own hand-fitting

On the cheap AR10 - I bet when the S&W 16 inch models become a little better stocked they are going to be found for $800 normally or even less from time to time..

Unfortunately at the moment it appears between the anti gunners stirring up trouble and it being a relatively new model, there are just not many to be found.

I believe the 16 barrel is easier to machine. Has been my guess I have the 18 and it's contour is much more elaborate then the plainer bull barrel of the 16 inch. Buyer beware Smith will not supply you with a new gas tube if you decide to install a low pro gas block and long free-float rail. Ive been trying an armalite one currently haven't had much luck

Venom - sorry I am not very up on messing with these things. Would like to understand what you are saying but I don't unfortunately

What problem did you run into with the gas tube exactly?

They have a brochure of what I believe to be condoned accessories, including a few free float hand guards w/ all the rails, so I ASSume anything in there or equivalent in form is going to fit OK without needing a part they won't sell.
