1870's-80's SAA cavalry use info sought

I recently read an 1870's-80's period account of early use by the US Army (cavalry) regarding carrying the new SAA pistol fully loaded at first, then after a number of AD's, the practice went to carrying 5 rounds. I don't recall where I read it, does anyone have the account, or know where I can find it?

I'm looking for this one specific written account, or similar period accounts relating to the same matter.

Thanks
