Hi i just acquired a old Smith & Wesson 38 special ctg and was wondering if anyone can help identify its model and maybe its age based on the serial number..
#3685xx it is a six shot revolver with a wood checkered grip and 4 inch barrel.. any help would be greatly appreciated also what ammos are safe to shoot thru this gun... thanks again John

cinmoon1: Your gun is almost certainly a .38 Military & Police, the model that eventually morphed into the Model 10 when S&W started assigning model numbers in 1957. Based on the serial number, it dates from the 1915 (SN 241704) to 1942 (SN 700000) period - you can interpolate using that information to get an approximate year of production, but it would only be an approximation.

Assuming no unusual mechanical problems, your gun is safe to shoot with any standard .38 Special ammunition. The SN indicates that it dates from slightly after when heat treating of cylinders was introduced, which is often interpreted to mean that it would also be safe with .38 Special +P, but I would not recommend subjecting such a nice old revolver to the hotter loads.

And what type of Ammo, etc. will this take/handle?

I happened to have the book (SCSW) handy... Serial number C38879x means it was manufactured between 1954-1956.

Someone else will have to answer about whether and how much +P ammo it'll take.

Thanks Kerberos, Damn this gun is older than I thought lol, it in very good shape to i might just try regular .38 special ammo so i wont hurt her much lol it very been fired by me but the person that had it took very good care of it.
I guess taken good care of your tool since it was made does help..

Good day folks, I'm new to this so bear with me. I have just acquired a Smith & Wesson 38 Special CTG, 6" blued barrel, squared walnut grips, 6 shot, adjustable rear sight. The s/n on butt of gun is 5k23xxx. The # under cylinder is 76758. Could someone give me a born date on this gun? Thank you.

The model number will be stamped on the left side of the frame, visable when the cylinder is opened. It should be a model 14, -3 revision.

You're missing a digit on the 17-2. Assuming it's K63XXXX, it's 1965.
270KXXX = 1983.

I just got my hands on a cheifs special, flat latch. I was told it was from 1952 SN 184XX, and was carried by police chief from NJ as his off duty weapon. I have been searching this thread and found nothing close to that range of serial numbers.
I was also wandering why an old set of J frame grips are too long and are about 1/8" past the frame. The barrel markings say .38 S&W special.
Any help would be appreciated.
