Smith and Wesson serial number search

hi, i've ran across a very old revolver and have had absolutly no luck on dating it.

serial number is 315xx

that's it, just those 5 numbers. no prefix. also has the same numbers in the handgrips. if someone could help me out i'd greatly appreciate it!

Hello everybody. New user to this forum and wonder if anybody can tell me anything about a gun I have here. It's a S&W 38 special, black with carved ivory dragon grips, at least I was told they were ivory. They're kind of turning yellow a bit and I can see a sort of grain to them. Serial number is C 103XXX. Thanks for any help! Also, would you be worried about getting gun oil on the ivory?

M 27-2, 5", nickle,Tgt hammer and trigger, Ramp front, adjustable rear (no insert on front or outline on rear blade) sn appears to be N 627656.

Serial numbers ran from N600000 in 1979 to N699999 in 1980.

How about V118709? Was it Navy does anyone know?

V118709 would be around 1942/43.
It would be marked ' US NAVY" or "PROPERTY OF US NAVY".

i have 2 S&W revolvers 1 is a .22 LR 7 shot SN 128xx
the other is a .38 S&W CTG top break SN 233xxx
i would like to know when they were made also is there any danger in using modern .38 S&W ammunition

.22 Ladysmith 2nd Model. Serial numbers ran from 4576 in 1906 to 13950 in 1910.
.38 Safety Hammerless 5th Model. Serial numbers ran from 220000 in 1907 to 261493 in 1940.
Modern .38 S&W ammo is safe to use.

Nickle plated 357mag 3.5 inch pinned barrel, square butt, wood inset grips, serial as follows S 123XXX

Serial numbers ran from S103000 in 1954 to S139999 in 1955.
It's simply known as the "357 Magnum" as it was the only one being produced during that time period. It's also referred to as a "Pre 27" and to a lesser extent, "357 model of 1950".

S&W reused serial numbers on different models, therefore, I need more information. Caliber, How many rounds it holds, Modern swing out cylinder or older break open, patent dates on barrel.

Serial number is C 103XXX.

.38 Military and Police. Went on to become the Model 10 when S&W started assigning model numbers around 1957.
Serial numbers ran from C1 in 1948 to C223998 in 1951.
Oil won't hurt but can yellow the ivory. A decent gunsmith can tell you if they are real elephant ivory.

The gun, ~$450.
The grips, that's a tougher one. Without seeing what they look like I couldn't say. Most seem to fall in the $200 to $500 range depending on design and condition.

i believe it to be a .22 (not sure magnum or LR) it has a hexagon barel. break open reload. and the patent date on it is stamped 1860. thanks guys!!!!

Does it look like this? What is different from yours and this picture.
Also, is it a 7 shot. Is the barrel hex (6) or octal (8). Is the 1860 the only markings on it. Is the cylinder unfluted (like below) or fluted.

Well, that's a Model Number One, 2nd Issue.
Serial numbers ran from 11672 in 1860 to 126361 in 1868.
It's a 7 shot chambered in 22 Rimfire Short, which is a black powder cartridge (not to be confused with modern 22 rimfire ammo).
It did not come with a trigger gaurd.

A175001 in 1973 to A235000 in 1974.

It would be a K-22 Outdoorsman, also referred to as a K-22 1st. Model.
Serial numbers ran from 632124 in 1931 to ~682419 in 1940. Yours would be 1934/35.

The serial number starts with S 821xxx.

That would be a .38 Military & Police postwar. The Model 10 is the modern version.
Serial numbers ran from S811120 in 1945 to S999999 in 1948.

I'm new to this or any other forum. Not even sure if "post reply" is what I wanted. Looking for 2 DOB's. First is my model 10 # BDF4900, and secondly a .357 that my buddy inherited. It's a 357 with a blued finish and 5" barrel.We think it dates from the early 60's or earlier. Registration documents have the serial # listed as 158335. Any ideas?

BDF4900 = 1989.

There should be a letter prefix (or a letter within the SN) with the serial number on your friends 357. Take the serial number from the underside of the frames grip butt.
He may have to take the grips off to see it.

I just got a S&W .38 from my Dad, he got it for his who won it in a poker game in Tokyo right after WW2 from a shore patrol man. Or at lest that is the story I have been told. I really know nothing about it. Its serial is V616***, any info would be great to have.

Its serial is V616***

The V prefix makes it a .38 Military & Police made during WWII, yours dating around 1943/44.
The modern version of it is S&W's Model 10.

SCSW doesn't have a lot of detail on J-frames from that period. Serial numbers ran from 125000 at the end of 1957 to 295000 in 1962.

Model 38 SN 34Jxxx

1971-72

Model 625 SN BEP7xxx

December 1989

Model 640 SN BKP5xxx

Approximately 1991-92 - they were using the 3-letter prefixes a bit out of order at that time.

And if anyone knows where to find info on S&W Semi-Auto serial numbers, I'm also looking for info on 5904 SN TCJ0xxx

The book doesn't have a great amount of detail on semi-autos, but there's enough to place the TCJ prefix in the 1988-89 timeframe.
