Hi. I just picked up a SW Model 15-3 (K38) Combat Masterpiece. The SN begins 3K7xxxx. Can anyone tell me the timeframe for manufacture? Thanks.

Flip - I haven't forgotten about you. I'm on a short business trip at the moment and don't have access to my book. I was able to find some years for a couple of other folks via other means, but yours will have to wait until I get back home this evening. I'm pretty sure your gun is around 1971-72, but I'll let you know definitively later if someone else doesn't answer in the meantime.

Since ya'll are kind enough to do this, here's the text from an elderly friend of mine:

38 Markings:

Barrel pointed to the left and wheel open:

Smith & Wesson: MOD-49: 18813; a “U” or horseshoe on its side; S&W Logo; on the but frame the serial number is repeated; stamped “6”, the U again and an “O” around the butt serial #.

The other side:

38 S&W SPL; Made in U.S.A. M or NARCAS REGISTRADAS SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS; STAMPED IN A TRIAGLE THE LETTER “W” and in a circ le the letter “D”.

On the butt:

3 J 9 5 6 8

Flip - I misremembered the "J" numbering sequence. Your gun is quite a bit newer than I thought, of 1983 vintage, just before S&W switched to the three-letter prefix numbering system. No problem with +p ammo.

xtp308 - Your friend's gun dates from the 1971-72 so-called "wandering J" period that I mistakenly thought Flip's gun was from.

Can anyone tell me what is the manufacturer date for a Smith 629-4 Classic with a serial # BSC6XXX.

Any other info you could tell me about this firearm would also be appreciated.

Your 629 Classic was produced in 1994. The 629 Classic was introduced in 1990 as essentially a full-lug version of the 629 (a stainless steel version of the venerable Model 29), which debuted in 1979. The -4 variation came out in 1993, with some relatively minor modifications to the rear sight and extractor. It was superseded by the -5 in 1997, and at that time the changes were substantial, including modifications to the frame and internal lockwork as well as the introduction of MIM hammer and trigger. The Hogue grips were standard on all 629 Classics.

I think they're great guns. I have a -3 from 1991 with the 5" barrel that is the most comfortable of my .44s to shoot.

Thank you so much for the information. I happened to stumble onto the -4 in a small town gunshop for $500 and its in like new condition. It's exactly the model that I wanted with no MIM parts or the Hillary hole.

This one has a 6" barrel.

TGS: You've got a pre-war .38 Regulation Police, the pre-Model 33. The information given in SCSW indicates they were produced from 1917 (starting at SN 1) to 1940 (ending SN 54474). No more specific breakdown is given, but yours was obviously toward the early part of that range - interpolating would put it at 1920, but that's only an approximation.

I am looking for information on a Model 60, 2" barrel, stainless steel snubby in .38 Special. The serial number begins with BKE9*** - can anyone tell what year it was manufactured and what it is worth now?

BKE serial number prefix would correspond to 1991. Value in the $400 to $450 range, depending on condition, perhaps a bit more if like new.
