I was wondering.
Do you non-LEO's carry handcuffs along with your legally carried handgun? For example, if you're able to stop a "bad guy" short of shooting him/her, how would you restain this person until LE arrives? At gun point only? Would this be the safest way for you? Or do you have another idea? By the way, if you do carry handcuffs, have you received training on how to properly use them? (Note: they are not as simple as they appear to use...ask any LEO.) Thanks for your opinions. |

I'm curious. Have you taken any of the serious civilian oriented courses?
They cover this stuff. Or read some of the good books out there. Anyhow, if the bad guy wants to leave - that's that. Unless you are in danger of grievous bodily harm or someone else - you really can't shoot 'em. You don't wrestle with folks. Wave bye bye. Tenessee vs. Garner precludes shooting the fleeing felon in most circumstances. |

I am not a LEO, but I do own a pair of cuffs. I don't use them on bad guys, though.

Actually, I took a class in law school that was taught by the guy who defended the fleeing purse snatcher in Tennessee v. Garner.

I haven't carried cuffs since I quit private security work.
I figure there is no reason for me to get close enough to cuff 'em. I'll have them either face down with legs and hands crossed or kneeling with crossed legs and interlaced hands behind the head. If he takes off at high speed, he will be followed by my laughter, insults, and curses. Doc Hudson |

If you ever have to use a gun for self defense I sure wouldn't want to explain to a jury why there was a set of handcuffs in my pocket at the time of the shooting. Talk about ammo that the prosecution will eat you alive with. They'll say your one of those people who think your a cop and went too far, they may even be right.
