Inexpensive Jacketed bullets for 5.56
I want to load up a few thou 5.56 with something relatively heavy like 62gr+ or as long as will cycle well. I plan to use for 300 yd shooting down to plinking. I have brass and primers. Need powder and bullets. The sources I have for jacketed bullits it hardly makes sense to set up and reload with little to no savings over green tips. I plan to punch paper and plink so I dont really care much about the type of bullet as long as I can get them at a reasonable price. Thinking somewhere in the $100 per 1000 would make sense to reload rather than buy ammo.
Also, I dont want to do a lot of experimenting beyond working up the load with 1 powder. What is going to be a good choice for powder? Im thinking CFE223 if I can find it on the shelf. Custom AR, 16" bull barrel, 1-9 twist

I don't know if this will help or not, but here is my formula. 55gr FMJBT that I buy by the thousand for $86.00, Ramshot TAC powder That I can get 8 lbs for $157.00, and Small Rifle primers that I get for $32.00 for 1000. I shoot paper and 'Squeeks' with this combo, and they work fine, I would prefer Hornady V-MAX but they are not always available. I have a Mossberg MVP bolt, and just recently purchased a S&W, M&P15 Sport. The reloaded ammo functions perfectly in both rifles.

Xtremebullets.com as 55g FMJ on sale for $41.27 per 500 right now.
I've yet to work up an accuracy load for my AR but my Ruger No. 1 likes W748 for sub MOA. |

H335 and the 55gn fmjbt from either Hornady or X-treme makes a nice accurate load for me at 100yds.

Thanks for the replies. How about something heavier? Im thinking to test my skill (or develop it) I will need a heavier bullet at 300yds. I will likely do the workup at 100yds.

I'd had in mind to direct you to some bulk Hornady 68 grain match bullets at Midsouth, but I looked again and saw the 9" twist. That's marginal for a bullet of that one's length. For match shooting you could do that weight range, but in a flat base. Or, you might discover your gun will digest the 68's despite what the calculators says, in which case you should get just 100 to find that out, first, then worry about large purchases. But either way, if accuracy is your objective, you will likely have to shell out for some kind of match bullet.
For 55's, Midsouth seems to have the best bulk price on Hornady for less than $0.08/each. But you have to buy a lot. 6000 I think it was.

Grafs has Hornady 53gr open tip match bullets for 17 cents per.
http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/...roductId/27489 For 300 on down to plinking range, there isn't much advantage going with a 62gr bullet over the 53s. But, if you are determined to use a 62, the Armscor 62gr FMJ is pretty decent accuracy wise, at least compared to SS109 surplus bullets that have the steel penetrator tip. http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/.../productId/254 Hope this helps. I've bought from everglades ammo before. prices are good and they always seem to be delivered within 3 days of ordering. although what's available doesn't always meet my needs.
http://www.evergladesammo.com/bullets.html besides 55gr, I see they have some 62gr steel core and some 75gr match bullets, but I think you need 1:7 or 1:8 for 75gr. |

I ordered 1000 Bulletheads in 62 gr. I'am disapointed in their accuracy. Four inch groups at 50 yards on a bench. Same rifle, same day, with diferent ammo was producing dime size groups. I don't really want to waste the time loading the other 900. I contacted Bulletheads and they said return for a refund. I just may do that.

I wonder at what price point it becomes advantageous to swage .223 projectiles from fired .22 LR brass? I don't think I'd hunt whitetail with them, but I'd expect them to kill paper and varmints (2- or 4-legged, armed or not) just fine.
