How to Clean a Ruger 10/22 ???

I just purchased a Stainless Steel / Black Synthetic stock Ruger 10/22... I also own an AR15... the AR15 breaks down very easily for intricate cleaning?

What is the recommended cleaning procedure for a 10/22? Do you have to disassemble it down to its basic components like my AR15?

All I've been doing is cleaning the barrel and swabing the action, where I can acces it through the ejection port, with Q-tips.

Any suggestions?

kramrd, I wouldn't take it apart any farther than what your owner's manual calls field stripping or than their maintenance instructions call for. You'd be surprised at how many of these come to me in a paper sack to be reassembled. If you don't have an owner's manual, let me know and I'll send you the procedure to field strip the rifle. Something that is easy any gets most of the crud out is to remove the stock form the action, then use 'gunscrubber' to blast out the crud. Spray in a little lube and reassemble. I do this every 1000 rounds or so.

You guys clean your 10/22's? Wow, no wonder mine is spitting hot powder out of the ejection port.

I have a friend who didn't clean his for 10 years. He complained about it being a cheap gun when it started jamming one day.

I field strip mine per the manual and will do a detailed cleaning about once a year...if used heavily.
