I've been using the Frankford Arsenal tumbler from Midway for a couple years now. Hasn't had a problem and it must have around 100 hours on it. Got it for 40 or 50 bucks.

Lyman tumbler.
I bought a Lymam 2500 about a year ago, it has had three motors in that time. Had to pay to ship it back each time. Would not buy it again.

I've owned a Thumbler's Tumbler for 28 years and it is a solid piece of equipment that has tumbled tens of thousands of rounds over the years.

I bought a Lyman 2500 with Auto Flow last month. The Auto Flow feature definitely does not work on .223, 7.62x39 or 7.62x54r so I purchased a RCBS media separator that works like a charm. The 2500 lasted exactly 3 weeks and the motor froze up. I packed it up and sent it back to Cabelas for a refund. A Dillon CV-500 is on the way to me now. I'm hoping for better results from Dillon!

I am new to reloading and starting to gather my equipment. I received the Harbor Freight flyer and see that they have a 5# Chicago Vibrator/Tumbler on sale for $40, model number 93252. Is this a unit worth looking at or should I look elsewhere as many have said at the Lyman? I will not be reloading 5000 rounds a month but I want this to last even if I was.

Another +1 for the smaller Dillon.
Don't forget a media separator. I tried to jury-rig something and wished I hadn't.

Thumbler's Tumbler is one of the best..IMHO
I have owned a Thumbler's Tumbler for just over 30 years now and all I have ever done to it is replace the drive belt a few times. I just buy big O rings from the local auto parts or tractor store. (They seem to hold up just as long as the original did.)
A while back (About 10 years ago or so) I also bought a RCBS media separator I dont know how I dug out all those cases for all those years. I love them both, and if my tumbler broke tomorrow, I would buy another without even thinking about it twice. I have had over 25 different calibers in 30+ years of reloading, and it has worked fine on all of them. Granted some of them are a little harder to remove media from than others, but they ALL came out nice and clean. I am looking at a Hornady L-N-L now, as I just started shooting a lot of .45ACP again after years of JUST working. I think the old Tumbler will really get a work out with that. I remember leaving it runing for months at a time over the years without any worry. You cant go wrong with that choice, in my humble opinion. Good luck to you. |
