How old are you?
I havent been on this forum for very long. In my limited time here I believe I have encountered forum members from a different generation than mine, or maybe they just don't think alike me. Lets see what you guys have to say.

Soon to be 54,and I can definitely see a differnce in the third generation from mine as far as respect goes. Shooting wise, the benefits I had were an almost unlimited area to hunt and shoot. Most folks around here "back then" only asked that you closed the gates and didn't shoot their cows. A lack of respect from the newer generations have got alot of those places posted off-limits now.Sad.

Whether you like it or not, one thing you should come to realize and accept is the fact that people between the ages of 40-60 run the world.
Now there are some exceptions to that rule, of people outside that age wielding knowledge and/or power, but for the most part it holds true. People past the age range of 40-60 recognize that there powers are diminishing and usually give way to those younger than they are. Of course they still offer valuable contributions and benefit from much of the knowledge and experience they have gained in their lives. It is very often the case that those younger than the 40-60 age range believe that they are wiser than their elders, but as a general rule they are not. Thats the way it has always been and always will be. "When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years."- Mark Twain

I'm fairly new to owning a firearm. I started my collection about 1 month ago. My friend Mike got me into shooting. He took me out to the range with his Kimber 1911. That was the first time I fired a gun and I wanted one ever since.
I came to this website in search of knowledge. I know I don't have very many posts but I can already tell that most users on this forum are probably older than I am. I'm not saying extremely older or anything but just enough of a gap to tell a difference. Judging from the poll right now I am the only one in my age group. 21 to 25. I am 24 about to be 25 this month |

49 and will be the 50 next year. I love the quote by Twain. That is so true. I am lucky enough to still have my Dad around and I really love being around him. When I was a kid I thought he was the most Un-cool, stupid person in the world. That opinion has changed a lot in the last 30 years. Yea he cannot remember what he had for breakfast but he is a wealth of knowledge. He is 77 and we still go hunting and fishing together. He is my best friend now and well as my Dad.
I spent the last 25 years in the army and I have seen the quality of our soldiers. The young people are very different from when I was young. I'm not going to say worse but Different. Somtimes I felt that I was from another planet when I was out in the field with my soldiers. The stuff they talked about was so out there. I think the younger generation have been Coddled too much. I believe this is a result of many growing up without a father in the house. There is a lot of worry about perception and not substance. I go to the range and when I see real young guys shooting there I always make it a point to see what they are doing, what they are shooting and such. Most will come up to you and talk about gun stuff. When we get in a Discussion about guns and reloading they soak it up. Most are starving for knowledge but never had a male figure in the house to take them shooting. I am going to get flamed by a female shooter on this board for saying this but its the way I feel. More Fathers should get involved with their kids. I think the boyscouts are a good start. I was not one but they seem like a good orgainization.

I just turned 24 last month. I can definately tell that there are a lot of older, more experienced, and more mature men (women too) on this board, but hey, that is one of the reasons I joined. Sometimes, I have to keep that in mind when I see pics of some of your gun collections, and I am blown away by how many guns you guys have. Then I remember that you have been collecting for 20-40 years. Anyway, this forum has helped me expand my horizons on several different fronts. Thanks.

56, It took until my 40s to realize that I am not indestructible. So I started to think there must be other ways to live safe. I try to use my mind instead of my fists, stay out of bars and shady neighborhoods. I am still a gym rat but my body doesn't work as well as when I was younger so I rethought my self defense. Maybe alot of us over 50 crowd feel this way, maybe not.

25 years old here.
Mega Twin "Soon to be 54,and I can definitely see a differnce in the third generation from mine as far as respect goes. I understand where youre coming from with this statement, but there are lots of us in that generation who are very respectful, but also are paying the consequences of the disrespectful one. I have always respected my elders, and anyone who lets me hunt or use their property. I always enjoy when I go to the range and there are older guys there shooting and I have good encounters with them. I can tell some of them have the same attitude as you though when it comes to younger guys like me and it is sad. Just try not to always judge youngers guys, just cause of their age. I give much respect to elders, and usually get it in return. Last edited by Tophe; December 11, 2008 at 12:32 PM. |

C Wiley---
Don't feel bad. I'm nearly 69, and I don't believe many people, even my age, think like me. It doesn't do any good to tell them they're wrong. LOL |

Only a wee lad at 21 I guess......I have to agree with Tophe that the condescending attitude that many of our elders and even peers cast down upon us (not referring to anyone on this forum, just a general statement) simply because of our age and generation is a bit discouraging and aggrevating. Years ago I was told by some of my much-older-than-I friends that I was a true anachronism, given my age and time. I can't remember a better compliment I've ever received. Try as I might however, 21 is 21 any way you cut it.
