Question about the possible Obama weapons ban...

OK, I'd like to throw out a hypothetical situation: Say that Obama becomes president and decides to 'ban' assault weapons in the USA including black rifles and high capacity magazines. Based on historical events, what would this do to the price of an AR-15 and high capacity mag, would the prices skyrocket? Do you think it would be a ban similar to full autos, they would just stop selling them to the general public and the 'pre ban' weapons in circulation would be worth 10x more? Do you think he would implement an outrageous 'transfer tax' similar to Class 3 weapons like suppressors so even if you had one you'd be stuck with it?

I'm amazed at how much the cost of weapons fluctuates over regulations and production. I went to buy an old Winchester 30-30 that they have been selling for $250 at Walmart for years and as soon as I went to buy one I found out that they stopped making them and the price jumped to $600 overnight! And my AR-15 with a simple $38 trigger upgrade to full auto would be worth over $10K (if it were actually legal to do this upgrade)!

Too many scenarios to consider. A high capacity mag. ban could include banning transfers and even possession. Class 3's could go the same way.

Unfortunately it looks like Obama's in the lead right now but a Republican Congress would take a lot of his ability to bite away. With a Democratic Congress throw money at the NRA as they would be our only hope.

Let's start with the first element of misinformation. The President can't ban anything. He may advocate for the passage of legislation by the Congress that would limit the types of weapons, magazines and ammunition. If Congress passes a bill like the AWB, the President - likely President Obama. . . will sign it into law.

The fight is not with the President at this point, it is with your Representatives and Senators . . . Remember the House is reelected every two years and they know that we can giveth or taketh away in a short period of time.
I remind them that my .22 Remington is on the list of assault weapons, as is my grandfather's Marlin .30-30 depending on whose definition is in vogue.

IMHO, there are other lobbying vehicles including http://www.rmgo.org and http://www.gunowners.org that are just as effective as the NRA-ILA.

I've already started to lobby my congress people. . . its never too early to let them know you are out there and what your views are.

Actually, the President can ban some things

The first Bush did it with imports. The President can't make a law banning anything already in the country, but he can make an executive order preventing the legal import of lots of things.

Congress is where we have to ensure our voices are heard, and listened to. Even though the usual suspects will continue to push the anti gun laws (they are too firmly entrenched in their home districts to worry about re-elections), the rest of the congress isn't, and they can be made to listen. Democrats lost control of Congress because of the 94 AWB (no matter what the media tells you, the AWB was the reason), and some of them will remember. What we have to do is remind them that what the liberal elite wants for gun control isn't what the rest of us want, and we can, and will vote them out if they go too far. We did it once, and we will do it again!

As other posters have stated, Congress is the real problem. We could very well have a filibuster proof Senate, and the House is not going to favor us either. Supreme Court will have to deal w/the bad laws, hopefully they will hear any RKBA cases before they get reorgainzed.

Don't panic. The election will not even be held for another two weeks. And even if Obama wins, he won't take office until January.

Further, even a Democratic Congress will not mean automatic passage of anti-gun laws - many Democrats both in Congress and running for seats are pro-gun and will not cave to pressure from the gun control gang.

But get ready to fight. First, join the NRA. AND IF YOU ARE ONE OF THE ANTI-NRA GANG, TELL ME WHICH OTHER GROUP WILL BE ANY MORE EFFECTIVE. GOA is a couple of guys in an office, RKBA is on the West Coast and clueless, etc. They mean well, but simply don't have the clout of four million members. As for AHSA, no matter what they say, they will back any and all gun ban proposals. Their mission is to deceive the naive but back the left wing gun control gang to the hilt.

And if you have a pro-gun Congressman or Senator or a pro-gun candidate is running against an anti-gun incumbent, forget party and contribute to the good man or woman. Even this late, your C-note may help buy the yard signs or bumper stickers that will change minds. And tell your friends where the candidates stand. Don't harangue or rant, just simply point out the flaws.

For example, Obama says he will "not take away hunting guns." But if he didn't want to take away any guns he would say that. Why does he specify? I can think of many laws that would eliminate private gun ownership in the U.S. without his breaking that promise. Examples: 1) Refuse to renew FFLs so no one can buy or trade guns. 2) Require registration of all guns and ban inheritance. You die, your guns are forfeit to the government, but not "taken away." 3) Impose a $10,000 a year tax on each gun. Can't pay it, surrender your guns, but they were not "taken away." 4) Ban sale and possession of any guns not legal for hunting in the state or guns owned by anyone without a hunting license on Jan. 1, 2009.

Here's a quote from Obama himself:

"The government needs to permanently reinstate an assault weapons ban"

I found this quote here:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,289373,00.html

Also in a question / answer session in Illinois he was asked and said:

Do you support state legislation to:
a. ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns? Yes.
b. ban assault weapons? Yes.
c. mandatory waiting periods and background checks? Yes.

Also,

2000: cosponsored bill to limit purchases to 1 gun per month

Also,

Principles that Obama supports on gun issues:
Ban the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons.

http://www.ontheissues.org/domestic/...un_Control.htm

IF OBAMA GETS ELECTED OUR GUN RIGHTS WILL BE NEXT TO NOTHING AND OUR COUNTRY WILL BE LEFT DEFENSELESS!!!

Listen folks, Obama or McCain you should join the NRA. I certainly prefer one over the other but that is beyond the scope of what this forum allows. It was Reagen who signed legislation in 86 which was a stab in the back to gun owners so having one party or the other in power is no guarantee.

Join the NRA no matter who is in office because they are the most effective voice lobbying for your 2A rights.

It is interesting to note in my election issue of American Rifleman that the breakdown of endorsed candidates includes several Democrats. Remember to look at the issue, not just the party.

Dedicated to education, safety training and support
of Illinois firearm owners
October 10, 2008

Fellow Sportsman,

Hello, my name is Rich Pearson and I have been active in the firearm rights movement for over 40 years. For
the past 15 years, I have served in the Illinois state capitol as the chief lobbyist for the Illinois State Rifle
Association.

I lobbied Barack Obama extensively while he was an Illinois State Senator. As a result of that experience, I
know Obama’s attitudes toward guns and gun owners better than anyone. The truth be told, in all my years in
the Capitol I have never met a legislator who harbors more contempt for the law-abiding firearm owner than
Barack Obama.

Although Obama claims to be an advocate for the 2nd Amendment, his voting record in the Illinois Senate paints
a very different picture. While a state senator, Obama voted for a bill that would ban nearly every hunting rifle,
shotgun and target rifle owned by Illinois citizens. That same bill would authorize the state police to raid homes
of gun owners and forcibly confiscate banned guns. Obama supported a bill that would shut down law-abiding
firearm manufacturers including Springfield Armory, Armalite, Rock River Arms and Les Baer. Obama also
voted for a bill that would prohibit law-abiding citizens from purchasing more than one gun per month.

Without a doubt, Barack Obama has proven himself to be an enemy of the law abiding firearm owner. At the
same time, Obama has proven himself to be a friend to the hardened criminal. While a state senator, Obama
voted 4 times against legislation that would allow a homeowner to use a firearm in defense of home and family.
Does Barack Obama still sound to you like a “friend” of the law-abiding gun owner?

And speaking of friends, you can always tell a person by the company they keep. Obama counts among his
friends the Rev. Michael Pfleger - a renegade Chicago priest who has openly called for the murder of gun shop
owners and pro-gun legislators. Then there is his buddy Richard Daley, the mayor of Chicago who has declared
that if it were up to him, nobody would be allowed to own a gun. And let’s not forget Obama’s pal George
Soros - the guy who has pumped millions of dollars into the UN’s international effort to disarm law-abiding
citizens.

Obama has shown that he is more than willing to use other people’s money to fund his campaign to take your
guns away from you. While a board member of the leftist Joyce Foundation, Barack Obama wrote checks for
tens of millions of dollars to extremist gun control organizations such as the Illinois Council Against Handgun
Violence and the Violence Policy Center.
Does Barack Obama still sound to you like a “friend” of the law-abiding gun owner?

By now, I’m sure that many of you have received mailings from an organization called “American Hunters
and Shooters Association(AHSA)” talking about what a swell fellow Obama is and how he honors the 2nd
Amendment and how you will never have to worry about Obama coming to take your guns. Let me make it
perfectly clear - everything the AHSA says about Obama is pure hogwash. The AHSA is headed by a group
of left-wing elitists who subscribe to the British view of hunting and shooting. That is, a state of affairs where
hunting and shooting are reserved for the wealthy upper-crust who can afford guided hunts on exclusive private
reserves. The AHSA is not your friend, never will be.

In closing, I’d like to remind you that I’m a guy who has actually gone nose to nose with Obama on gun rights
issues. The Obama I know cannot even begin to identify with this nation’s outdoor traditions. The Obama I
know sees you, the law abiding gun owner, as nothing but a low-class lummox who is easily swayed by the
flash of a smile and a ration of rosy rhetoric. The Obama I know is a stony-faced liar who has honed his skill at
getting what he wants - so long as people are willing to give it to him.
That’s the Barack Obama I know.

Sincerely,
(original signed)
Richard A. Pearson

Wow, I can't believe this:

Quote:
That same bill would authorize the state police to raid homes of gun owners and forcibly confiscate banned guns.
Can they do that? I thought this was America, the land of the free?

Closing note

This thread was never really about NFA material. It is off toplic for this forum. It was allowed to run for a time, to allow for a certain amount of venting, but that activity has run downhill into pointless ranting, with the noise far exceeding any residual signal.
