Remington makes a cool new rifle in 221 Fireball. Single shot, though. If you want a repeater, Sako used to make one, but I'm not sure if they still do.

I haven't been keeping up with rifles lately. About the only rifle I know that is currently chambered in .221 is the CZ527 American and it doesn't have a heavy barrel.

I'm sure you know the .221 Fireball is a handgun round, but to me it is an excellent rifle round for varmints. I had one made on a Rem. 700 ADL action with a douglas barrel for NE Ohio ground hogs. It is in benchrest configuration and weighs to much for me to carry since my back surgery. I have to take a friend along to act as a gun bearer when I shoot it.

Rimrod-
Ask your friend if he is also willing to be your shooting bench, as long as you don't use a bench rest with pointed feet.

The best 221 fireball rifle is a pistol.

That's what it was made for.

So, I'd say get an XR-100 and have a 16.5" bull barrel installed with a beefed up recoil lug.

Or - maybe try the same thing with the new Savage LRPV.

You might look at the Remington 700 Light Varmint 22" fluted stainless steel barrel and jeweled bolt action, synthetic stock. It comes in 221 Fireball. I'm trying to buy one. I had one on lay away at the Gander Mountain in Binghamton, NY but the store got flooded (5 feet of water in the store) before I made the last payment. They are ordering me a new one at the same close out price but it has been a long process. I have to go 80 miles to Scranton, PA to get it but I think it will be worth the trouble. Not crazy about the synthetic stock and already have my eye on a thumbhole laminante to replace it. Gotta get the gun first.
