Look down a road on a hot summer day-the view is distorted by the heat coming off the asphalt. Same effect looking down a hot barrel. The raised rib does two things-it gives a nice flat sight plain (as opposed to a curved barrel) and it is not in constant contact with said hot barrel, allowing it to remain somewhat cooler, with air circulating underneath to allow more cooling.

The guys are right on the money. Less "Mirage" and better cooling. Plus....

All bbls bend during the launch. O/Us bend less since the other bbl serves as a brace. All else equal, the stock on a SXS can be straighter than one on an O/U for the same POI. This is why trap guns tend towards exaggerated high ribs. They use a straight stock and have to raise the rib to keep things in proportion.

The rib serves as a brace, also, meaning that the shotgun can be stocked a little straighter, thus lowering felt recoil a trifle.

And, the extra metal serves as a heat sink, so it takes more shots to get warm enough to have mirage be a problem.
