History Help

Referring to an earlier thread. Doing some research on the Winchester 101 20ga. o/u, skt/skt (looking for online owners manual).

I found several of these shotguns for sale on-line and noticed they make a special note if the gun has a red "W" on the pistol grip cap (mine does).

I contacted Winchester and spoke with their "historian" he said when USRA aquired Olin that they received very little data on the Models 70, 101 and 12.

Can anyone give me an idea of the significance of this red "W"?
