Carry Permit - test passed.

My fiance' and I both passed our test this evening.
It was really cool, it was done at a ranch south of Minneapolis, so we got to be outside the whole time and watch the heavy storms while we qualified. It was much more relaxing (and I scored better) than being at an indoor range.

Got to see a lot of guns I hadn't had a chance to come across yet.
There were 2 that peeked my interest -
Colt Gold Cup
Sig 357/.40

I will definatley be checking both of those out at the next shooters show.
Surprisingly, all 18 people passed.
And yes, my better half did shoot slightly better than I did.
We both qualified with the CZ P-01.

Next comes the application process.
Hopefully there won't be any problems.

/edit: And I must say, the target we used seemed a lot smaller than most classes I have seen. We had a "mini guy" target. With the scoring at x: 10, 9, 8, 7. Other people I talked to used almost full size black and white targets. Oh well. Passed anyway.

I am going to carry the P-01 IWB with a holster from Eric Larsen. (I will post pics when received.)
By the time my paperwork goes through with the County, the holster should show up. WOOHOO!
Also going to order a 15 lbs trigger spring to replace the 22 lbs? spring.
And that really cool looking Polished Metal Guide Rod to replace the plastic guide rod.

So some upgrades just in time to put it in the holster.

I live in a state that has a very vague qualification standard for carry permits. Out of curiousity, what does Minnesota require? Or other states, if anyone wishes to chime in.

In MO we use a full size B37 torso target. Firing distance is 7 yards. If you can't hit that 15 out of 20 rounds, you shouldn't be carrying anyway. I did have one gal in my class fail the first time, but this instructor said the statute didn't say how many times you could try to qualify.

The "law" doesn't really say anything outside of "qualifying via a licensed instructor". This is also being changed to have private licensing to state licensing, effective October 2005? I think.

I don't know the name of the target, but it was pretty small.
Lets see if I can find it.

I believe it is called the B-29 target. A small man silo target.

11 inches by 22 inches. Not very big at all.
Some of the others have the larger than fullsize body silo. Unbelievable.
We had to get a score of 175 or higher (not too hard) with 25 shots. If you hit 7 or better with all 25, you pass.

In Florida I think the minimum is a 2 hour class and shoot at least 1 round to show "proficiency" I took a 4 hour class that included 1 hour range time. Three times the price but well worth it. Either class gets you a certificate needed to apply for the ccw.

Right. Just about any class that "demonstrates competency with a firearm". That's what I meant by vague. I took the gun show course, 'cause someone told me it was cheap. I figured that would be a good idea- CCW for $35? Found out it was $49 with the fingerprints and picture. o.k.....$49, I got that. A couple of hours in the class going over safety, F.S. 790 and lethal force.

Range time. First time I had ever fired a gun in my life. One shot at a man sized target at 10 feet, and good to go. Well that and $117.

I didn't really know what to think of it. I didn't really feel safe carrying a handgun. But it seemed like shooting was something I wanted to do more of.

I applied for the permit, and in the meantime took another course, to actually learn how to shoot and carry a gun. Then I felt safe enough to buy a gun- just one gun, BTW. Wife said so. Actual carrying came later, after much practice.

Here In Ohio, In Order To Get A Certificate Of Qualification, We Have To Attend 10 Hrs Of Classroom Instruction And Two Hours Range Time. Need To Score At Least 80 Out Of A Possible 100 Pts. Shoot Strong Hand/ Weak Hand Unsupported At 3 Yard And 7 Yards Then 10 Yards Strong Hand Supported.

Oh. Sorry, maybe I misunderstood the question.
We also had 6 hours of class time.
We talked about all the situations where you CAN and CANNOT use your pistol.
When you should and when you shouldn't.
The conditions (4 conditions must be met at the same exact time - simultaneously) for being able to protect yourself - in the state of MN.

How to avoid using your weapon, etc.
I thought it was a very good course.

The state of MN does not specify anything other than certified instruction.
No limits or requirements.
That is up to the instructor.

What class did you take and where? I'm in MN as well, and am going to get the ball rolling on my CCW.

At my class here in TN, we shot 48 rounds. Seems like about half at 7 yards, a dozen or so at 12 yards, and then again at 18 yards. Had to have 70% in the torso. Everybody passed out of about 20.
I don't understand the longer shots since they will be hard to 'justify'.
