Gun shoots better not from a rest

How can this be? I mean shouldn’t being able to keep the crosshairs perfectly still be most important??

What kind of gun? If it's a long gun, are you resting it on the stock or barrel?

I've got several heav[ier]-recoiling rifles that like a firm/consistent forearm grip -- especially my lighter Marlin/carbines.
In fact I make a special note to that effect on the cover of those weapons' shooting logs.

Sooooo..... what rifle/cartridge are we talking here ?

Make sure that the rest is padded and that the barrel isn't touching the rest.

I think all guns would shoot more accurately from a rest when set up properly. Also how you position yourself behind the gun .

I would say the issue is with the shooter. I have the same issue with handguns and rests. I do better offhand. With rifles, definitely better from the rest.
