Colt bolt

Okay can someone help an 82 year old dummy? My son gave me a Colt Sporter M4 in223 cal. and I thought I would clean it. I removed the back pin and broke it down and the bolt and charging handle came out and for the life of me I can't get them back in. Any advice other than taking it to someone who knows what they are doing?

Actually the bolt goes in fine, it's the charging handle that is the problem. If it would slip in the bolt would go right on in. I am sure I am doing something wrong but ai can't get the handle to go more than an inch. Advise me if you can.

Put the charging handle, by itself, halfway back into its slot. In other words, several inches should still be sticking out of the upper receiver.

Put the Bolt Carrier Group (BCG) against the back of the upper receiver, but do not try to push it is in yet.

Lift the BCG up under that handle, with the tubular part of the BCG fitting into the empty space on the bottom of the charging handle.

Holding the BCG up against, and parallel to, the charging handle, push them together completely into the upper receiver. They should just slide in without any need to force them.

Close the Upper down onto the Lower, push the take-down pin back into place, and get on with shooting!

Oh, and the internet is chock full of U-tube videos and downloadable documents on operating this weapon. It doesn't need lots of cleaning, but it needs to have correct lubrication.

We posted at the same time!

The charging handle needs to initially be tipped down a bit in back, so that you put it in place at an angle to just get it a short way into the upper receiver.

Then you can swing it up to be on the same axis as the receiver and it will slide all the say in.

Had the same problem. Heard the AR 15 was idiot proof. Guess they never talked to this idiot

A couple minutes on internet forums and I was able to pop mine back in

Make sure the bolt is in the "forward" position. If it's back close the front of the bolt carrier, it won't go back in the upper.
