Lowers
I'm fairly new to the AR platform of rifle. I bought a Ruger AR556 a year and a half ago but just this past month I converted it over to a 300blk. I've started researching the platform and the different calibers and I'm very interested in the 458 socom. I know to change it over to the 458 socom I have to change the barrel and bolt. My question is do I have to change the complete upper, this I plan on anyway later so I can have complete uppers for the 5.56mm, the 300blk, and the 458. Now what I need to know is about the lowers. Is the AR556 lower the same as the lower for a 456 socom? I'm going to eventually get some 80% lowers for my uppers so I can have complete rifles of each but for now will the lower I have work or is there something I need to change to make it work for now?

Considering the relatively low cost of simply starting with a new upper, I can't recommend dismantling a factory assembled upper to change calibers.
The big bore AR uppers often use an enlarged ejection port so it's more than just swapping a barrel and bolt to go big bore. |

I couldn't agree more. A new assembled upper (FA + dust cover) can be found for $60 or less, a standard charging handle is $12. Of course the big bore stuff might be a bit more but if you're stepping up to something like the 458socom wouldn't you want it to be right? I'm interested in the socom myself, but I'm not going to cheap out and buy anything but Tromix. I want it to run when I get it done.

.458 SOCOM Requires a bigger ejection port on the upper. I have been building whole rifles. In the future I am going to just build uppers it easier and no FFL transfer required.
put a nice trigger in the lower and just switch out uppers. |
