500 Yards

Tried to set up the rifle for a picture with my phone. It is canted somewhat in the picture. This is a cheap Simmons Whitetail Classic, 6.5-20x 50mm Adjustable Objective Mil-Dot Reticle. The dots & crosshairs are rather thick but work for what I'm doing.

At 500 the target [a black 12X12 plate] is centered between the 2nd & 3rd dot.

Well, how did you do? My local range only goes to 300, but I have a friend who is a hay farmer with some big fields. I've gone to his place a few times and shot at 400, 500 and tried 600.

I prop up an old wooden pallet covered with paper. That way all of my shots will show up and I can tell how much I need to correct.

What a nice place to shoot , what caliber & rifle are you shooting . The ranges in my neck of the woods LI, NY are max. 200 yards which is my zero . I'm shooting a Rem. 700 308 cal.
How did you shoot , looked like a perfect day.

I just picked up a rifle with a simmons scope on it a 6-24x44, and its nice and clear and tracks well, I was shooting pennies with it the other day at 100 yds..
I too would like to know how you did at 500 and what caliber? I am limited to 100 yds at my range..You have a great place to shoot!!!

"...It is canted somewhat..." That's more than somewhat. That the scope or the rifle? Matters.
Easily fixed with a bore sighter if it's the scope. Square in the rings can be quickly checked by putting the rifle in a padded vise and then putting a 6" spirit level on the rifle to square/level the rifle then on the scope turret to check the scope itself. Easier to do than describe how.

I would think that anyone shooting at a distance of 500 yards would know the scope isn't squared , LAH " work to do before church" you range looks like Heaven to me . Let's see some good shooting. No cheating with pencil holes.

I must be spoiled. I can shoot as far as I desire (up to 1K yards) but lost interest after the kids left home. I'm down to a 100 yard range with a solid bench and a 300 meter swinger and target butt with a standing height shooting support.

To answer a few questions.

1. Well, how did you do? Tuesday I was fire forming cases with a 152 gr. FMJ Spitzer. The load was 48 grs. of 4895. These are pulled bullets & not the best but will stay on the 500 yard 12X12 plate nicely.

2. What caliber & rifle are you shooting? 30-06, 700 Remington in a Hogue Overmolded
Stock with a bedding block.

3. Very nice (private?) range! The range is a private club & nice. There is no power or
running water there. This is located on reclaimed mining land.

4. Let's see some good shooting. No cheating with pencil holes.
I have some plate pictures I'll post. Remember this isn't a tack driving load. The
bullets aren't up to it but since I have just a little over 6 cents each in them I won't
gripe. I use this load for offhand, kneeling, sitting & prone to help my shooting skills
on the cheap.

All plates shot 3 times.

200 yd. One bullet hid by the rule at the 3" mark.

300 yd

400 yd. One shot off target just to the right.

500 yd

Great day at the range, never shot steel target , would love to give it a try. Nothing like that in my neighborhood .

Did you ever try the Sierra match king ? That's all I shoot 168gr HPBT , very accurate for me . My rifle shoots well with IMR 4064.

I shot the Sierra 168 several years ago in another rifle. They are a great bullet. I will shoot them in this rifle soon but at this point with this rifle it's all about shooting cheap.

This scope tracks very good & is clear. The only fault I have is the crosshairs & mil-dots are very course.

I suggest giving the 175 or 180 gr Match king a try too. I like them better and they handle the trans-sonic zone better than the 168 gr smk. If you seat the bullet long, and use Winchester brass, you can get close to .300 wm saami velocities using powders like H4831.

But then again, seated long and using Norma brass, I can make a .300wm rival a .300RUM

Thanks Mississippi. When I get serious here I'll shoot some good bullets. I like the 180 Match King & the 190. My range is limited to 500 yards so the 168 is really plenty but where's the fun in not trying other things.
