Veterens- What Shotguns did you use

I served with a Marine rifle company for three years. When we deployed to Panama in 89' we were issued a bunch of Rem 870 shotguns. They had a least a 20in barrel, and were parkerized with wood stocks and a ventilated heatshield. They had a huge bayonet lug that clamped onto the barrel and mag extension. However, other Marine units operating in our area carried Mossberg's with heatshields and symthetic stocks. I also saw USAF SP's carrying Ithaca 37's.

When you where in the Military, What shotguns did you use or see in service

South East Asia in 1970 had lots of shotguns around. I saw Ithacas, Savages, 870s, A-5s, 12s and 97s. A 97 was part of our crew equipment and a real comfort on guard duty.

I was a firefighter, but things got hinky a couple times.

Shotguns then, and probably now, show up through "Irregular" channels.

1969-72 Military Police in Germany & Vietnam - saw just about all mentioned before. Typically our MP Company had a shotgun for everyone but brands were mixed - Savage, Ithaca, Winchesters, etc. All had bayonet lugs, not necessarily extended magazines, no heat shields, short 20 inch barrels. That's about all I recall - been a long time. Will confess I liked a shotgun or M-79 40mm grenade launcher!

Thank you veterans !

I'm not a veteran , but my MP sgt friend just returned after 14 mo in Baghdad . His unit was staioned in the city . Their duty involved guarding a key bridge and neighborhood patrols . They carried the usual small arms and the 8 shot Mossberg 500 . He said the locals weren't too impressed with their rifles and machineguns , but got very attentive whenever a pistol was drawn or when they saw the business end of the shotgun .

Used the Remington 870 for several years and in Iraq. We also started using the Benelli M1014 a few years back, which is a beautiful work of destructive art

When my dad was in Vietnam he would occasionally carry a 1897 Trench Gun around. Granted, he wasnt military so much as he was government. But after his duration there the 1897 followed him home.

Wish I could say the same about the Uzi and Model 12 Beretta he used.

Iraq 2004 - 2005
A buddy of mine on the entry team had an 8 shot Mossberg 500.
I was stuck dragging the 240.

East Timor- the Royal New ZEaland Airforce had Remington 870's. I had a fwe shots with them. OP ENDURING FREEDOM- the Royal New ZEaland Navy used 870's as well. The Army is trialing shotguns at the moment. Some SAS guys I know have used them in Afghanistan.

I never saw a shotgun in three years in the army. Colt .380 pocket pistols, yes, but no shotguns.

However, I have two photos of my father when he was in the service a mere 22 years earlier (it was almost 40 years before I had a son in the army after I left the service!) and he is armed in both pictures. In one he is in dress OD's with a revolver in a reverse draw holster. In the other, he is in fatigues, complete with Daisy Mae hat and standing in front of a bell tent. He is armed with a shotgun.
