installing fiber optic rods... how to best do it ???

is there a general type directions for replacing fiber optic rods ???

I'm building a couple custom fiber optic sights, & ordered a set of replacement fiber optic rods, to use for my sights... they'll need to be cut, & I think ( heated ??? ) to mushroom the ends ( I was hoping replacement directions would have came with them, but they did not )

I want the most light transmission possible, so I'm sure there are better ways ( or the best way ) to do this over others...

any suggestions ???

Polishing after cutting will help light transmission greatly. If you want a larger selection check McMaster-Carr supply house (obviously on line, use a search).....

I e-mailed the supplier, as I didn't ge any instructions with the rods, & this was thier reply...

Quote:
we usually cut it with a sharp pliers or razer blade. We always leave it a little extra long; maybe

1/16 to 1/32 of an inch and then run the flame of a butane lighter passed the end. It melts quickly and gives a nice smooth surface.

Practice makes perfect, good luck.
