Finally have an AK47 on the way

I've been wanting some sort of AK47 for a long time. 20 years ago, I had an SKS with bayonet, folding stock and 30 round mag. I fell in love with the 7.62x39. Have shot and never really got interested in the .223/5.56 although I do like the AR15 platform. One thing about AR15's, seems like everyone and their brother has one. I do have an M&P 15-22 that I just love to shoot. And it's cheap to shoot. An AK47 would be something I don't see at the range I go to.

I've been doing research for the past year on AK47's. I was planning on slowly saving and buying next year some time. Then Obama got re-elected,errrr. He has an evil plan to ban these types of guns. No guarantee it will pass but I don't want to take a chance.

So I ended up selling my Snap On Roller Cabinet and ordered an Arsenal SLR101-13 today Should be here next week some time. I decided on the Arsenal because I know AK47's aren't very accurate but I hear the Arsenal ones are pretty decent for accuracy. Also it has a Bulgarian Milled Reciever and a chrome lined barrel so it should last several life times or the Zombie Apocolypse Will post pics when it gets here.

The SLR101 is a good value in today's market. It'll be a rifle that will outlast everyone on this forum...

Happy to see another AK chosen over the AR15.

I have both. But prefer my AK ( I have 3). I can get better accuracy out of my AK than my SKS. Not a huge fan of the 7.62 but if you want to tear stuff up and put alot of lead down range quickly the AK is the best thing money can buy besides a FAL or AR10 which cost about double an AK.

Good choice and enjoy

I hate to piggyback on the OP's thread but I just picked up my first AK at a gun show yesterday. I have steadily watched the priced on them go up for the last couple years and decided that I didn't want to watch it go up any more.

Its a Romanian imported from Century Arms I beleive. I am not very familiar with AKs at all so any advice on them of any kind is welcome.

Ok, hehe. It comes with one 10 round mag. I ordered two Tapco Intrafuse 30 round mags. Are those any good? Any better mags? Thanks.

Dont buy tapco mags for the Arsenal!! They fit like shyt the bulgarian circle ten mags from KVAR fit like a glove and are made for the arsenal they are a little pricey but worth it. You can pic up some surplus steel mags from AIM for cheap they fit and work well too BTW you might as well get the 40rds mags before they impose a federal mag restriction! Just so you know too the Arsenals are great guns with one exception the finish sucks! I sent my AK74 out to MACS shooting irons in AZ and had it molly coated it came out awsome. I'm going to send out my 47 soon to get that done as well.

Just ordered two 40 round steel mags. Not many places had any in stock.

KVAR was all out, found some at Mississippi Auto Arms.

AIM was sold out of the Romainian 40 round, it does look like they have Russian 40 round still in stock.

One guy at our range... had no problem with the TAPCO AK mag fit --- after he had to partially grind away the sides of the TAPCO mag with a Dremil tool grinder. Check on YouTube for instructions. May I suggest...that you use oil sparingly on the inside of the reciever and trigger group --- because it rains oil like a monsoon rainfall --- thru that empty space in the dust cover clamp, that spews oil all over my safety glasses.

And for good reason!

Actually I have both, a few good ARs and a lowball WASR I got five years ago. Hope you like your new AK!

Yeah, I'm sure I'll like it. And I do love my M&P 15-22. Exact copy of the AR15 but cheap to shoot.

Clean and lubricate the AK link

Basic maintenance above on my WASR. If your WASR was properly assembled it'll perform as well as any other AK on the market. They have excellent barrels and should be great shooters; they just look ugly

I also have an slr 101-13. I picked mine up 2 weeks before the election. The writing was basically on the wall with that one.

Anyway, yeah tapco mags suck. Do NOT buy waffled tapco mags. They will not fit your rifle. The non waffled will fit eventually... after loosening up a bit. Still I recommend Bulgarian mags. They are machined for your rifle and will fit in their with a nice click just like the 5 rounder your rifle comes with. I know they are a bit pricy but I'd rather have 2 quality mags then 5 crappy ones.

+1million on the Arsenals are bad @ss guns but the finish sucks walrus testies. I love mine. The thing is a tack driver man, with irons at 100 yds. When I mount an aimpoint red dot I expect nearly the same accuracy at 200.

Just picked it up today. It says slr-101s, not slr101-13. But thats ok, the 10 round mag that it comes with is a double stack. I heard some slr-101s's only take single stack mags. Can 't wait to shoot it. My two 40 round steel Bulgarian mags should be here tomorrow.

Oh, how do you put the sling on the stock?

Goes well with these two.

I only got the Tapco mags today. I ordered them before I heard they were junk. Steel ones should be here tomorrow. A little work with the grinding wheel and they do fit.

The Tapco mags work fine given the adjustments you mentioned. I like the 7.62x39 as well, the FMJs are awesome penetrators.

Congrats on the AK. I got a Saiga in .223/5.56 for Christmas last year and did a conversion on it a couple months ago. It really is a slick gun.

I am undecided on which I like better (AK or AR). The AR does seem to be lighter and they say it is more accurate. But, from my personal experience the AR does jam more and that "SPROOIINNNG" in the ear is obnoxious.

I think the most interesting thing about my Saiga is the recoil. It seems to recoil back like normal but then the spring seems to pull it back forward back onto target.

Yeah, 20 years ago, I had an SKS. It would shoot through 1/4 inch steel no prob.
