IMR 3031 in .45-70. I'm thinking I need a faster powder?

I recently loaded up some .45-70's to shoot in my Marlin 1895G with 45gr of 3031 and a speer 300gr jacketed bullet. I use this powder in an old 336 with very good luck, but I'm thinking I might need something faster for the short 18" barrel. Accuracy was good out to 150 yards, which is the max I could shoot at the range I was at. The problem was that every shot was blowing crud out the barrel ports sideways at other folks on the line. I'm guessing that the 3031 isn't burning fast enough and the aforementioned "crud" is unburnt powder?

I have always found 3031 to be very clean in the 45/70. IMR's website lists the range for a 300 grain bullet at

300 GR. SIE HP IMR IMR 3031 .458" 2.525"
58.0 1971 21,900 CUP 64.0C 2196 29,500 CUP

If you are looking for light loads then switch powder. But if you get into the range IMR calls for I think it will clean up.

IMR 3031 is my "go to" powder in my 45-70. It burns clean, gives good velocity and I find it the most capable of great accuracy. I don't shoot a lot of bullets in the 300 gr class but more in the 405 class along with some 500 grain bullets.

Thanks for the advice. My Lyman manual lists the starting charge at 45gr. I'll heat them up a bit and see if anything improves.

You might try some RL7 also. A good friend has a guide gun and that's what he is using.
