hello new to the forum

hello all, my name is Kenneth Mowrey and i am new to this forum. i have been shooting black powder for many years but am just getting in to cap and ball. picked up and 1858 Pietta made .44 on a trade last week as well as a Ruger old Army i bought for a song and dance! i will make separate post with questions about both shortly!

Welcome to TFL, Kenneth !

That ROA is the cream-de-la-creme of C&B revolvers, and can take heavy loads, indeed - even a .45 Colt conversion cylinder.

If you prefer different grip panels on the ROA, there's a bunch of replacements available, under it's Ruger XR-3 gripframe pattern.

I wouldn't, however, load that brass-framed (Pietta) Remington copy anywhere near as heavily as the ROA, though - brass frames can be stretched/cracked rather easily, unless soft/plinking loads are used.

I like yer bowie knives - are they self-made ?

the Ruger has not been fired, i am definitely thinking about spending the $$ to convert it. the throwing knives were a gift from a friend and i am an avid thrower.

i shoot a lot of bp bust just got in to pistols. love my flintlock smooth bores the most.

Members get a 10% discount from ClassicBallstix aftermarket cylinders that hold an additional 5-10 grns of powder and are very well made by all accounts.

In case you aren't aware your brass framed Remington shouldn't be loaded with stout powder charges as it will batter the frame. A max load for it would be somewhere around 20-25 grns of 3F powder.

Welcome to the forum. Load the '58 brass lite, and load the ROA as heavy as it will shoot well. I believe you will enjoy them both very much. Converting the ROA will add another dimension to the shooting fun. Be sure to pick up some Colt repros when you can. And a steel framed '58.

I agree that you are off to a good start.

Remington is a good inexpensive place to get you going.

The Ruger is the ultimate BP shooting tool.

Both pistols will make a believer of you.

I've been thinking about one of those myself! It seems a .50 cal as my rifle would be better as I can share my stuff, but who wouldn't rather have a .54 cal???

Welcome to the forum Kenneth! Nice set of shooting irons! You ought to have a lot of fun with 'em. That ROA looks nice! It's too bad they stopped making 'em as they were a well built BP revolver.

Love the throwing knives as well. I have watched others throw knives and did a little tomahawk throwing myself. When I tried throwing knives, I soon discovered that there should be a point on each end!

Great bunch of folks here . . . . you'll enjoy it!
