Shot out of RRA LAR8

Well yesterday morning I loaded up 5 different loads with slightly different powder amounts. All using Hornady bullets, IMR 4895 and WLR primers.

5 rounds with 178 grain HPBT at 39.6 grains (1.5 inch group, shooter aided)

5 rounds with 178 grain HPBT at 40.6 grains (.5 inch group)

5 rounds with 178 grain HPBT at 39 grains (1 inch group)

5 rounds with 165 grain SST at 40.5 grains (.75 inch group)

5 rounds with 165 grain SST at 40 grains (.5 inch group)

What was amazing was the amount of difference where the 165 grain bullets impacted up and down vs the 178 grain bullets. I have never really played around with different bullet weights but they make a big difference at 100 yds even.

I don't have 100 rounds through the gun yet but it is shooting as advertised that is for sure. I will post a few pics of the best groups.

Nice! Did much better then I did. Although I think some.of the issue is I meed to get better at shooting rifles. This is AA2460. Starting load on left and working up. Not sure where the 4th round went on the second target, had to of gone thru the same hole

The load appear lighter then published because I used LRM primers.

If you're using Winchester brass... work on up to 42.0 grains of the IMR 4895 with the 178's... you'll likely find that load will group much better than what you've got so far (not that you've done badly at all... just sayin')...

With Lapua or RP cases, use 41.7 grains of IMR 4895 with the 178's.

For your 165's, OCW (Optimal Charge Weight) in Winchester brass should be at 43.7 grains. Drop that by .3 grains for Lapua or RP brass.

With FC cases... reduce by a full grain of powder, as they're thick...

.308 5 shots 100 yrds. Nosler brass, Federal match primers, 168 gr. Sierra Match over 43.8 gr. Varget.

If you fired those same loads again into 5-shot groups, their sizes would probably shift around and another load or two would be the smallest.
