My First Deer!

Going through some stuff and found this old picture today!

Got this guy on Dad's property with my $175 .243 Win and 105 grain Federal factory ammunition. We never owned big game rifles growing up and I'm the only one in my family that hunts. I got this guy in 1991, this picture is the only one I've found and the antlers were lost (intentionaly by mom I think) during my first stint of active duty for the Army. She probably got tired of them hanging on her porch.

I never got another decent deer until 2006, but I saved the antlers this time.

Considering the time of year, I was prepared to see a photo of a deer splashed across the front of your Buick!

You were a precocious hunter, killing such a big buck your first time out.

Way to go! Hang onto that old photo. Some day you'll dream of that day. My old first rack is still hanging in the barn. Biggest deer to date. Ruined me for life.

You know when I started out I thought all deer were like my first buck. Both of my deer were well fed and fattend up just like a choice steer on Dad's milo and hay fields. Word got out about the deer on the eastern plains and hunting pressure is up as well as a nasty drought went through a few years back and big bucks are harder to find. Where I used to be able to find 30-40 deer within a few miles of Dad's place I'm lucky to find 3.

Are you close to a CWD unit?
Numbers will probably never be what they were again.

Nice looking racks on your bucks

No CWD units close by but it will probably only be a matter of time until it happens.

Pretty dang good for the 1st deer. I probably would have felt like Superman if I had got one that big.

Very nice deer. Congradulations. Your going to have your work cut out trying to beat that one. Nice.

Nice buck! If I had killed a deer that big, his horns would be in my personal effects in Basic Training
