copper plated, not fmj ?

The local indoor range started as of March 1st not allowing any lead bullets, they all must be fmj or copper plated because of lead polution he says. Has anyone else run into this ?

For reloading you treat plated bullets just like lead ones.

No lead bullets at the indoor ranges I use here in SE Michigan. One indoor range makes sure of that by limiting you to use ony ammo they provide (sell).

Yes, my local indoor range ....has not allowed any lead bullets ( for centerfire calibers ) for at least the last 10 yrs...

lead bullets ...give off a lot more lead dust / and a lot more smoke...and they have to turn the ventilation system way up ...to move that smoke downrange.../ so they just said no more...

Fairly common and in reality they are doing you a favor. Kind of like second hand smoke in bars and restaurants, it's better for you and especially the employees. I would have a problem with them only allowing their ammo, maybe I wouldn't complain if they had very fair prices. But, being a reloader I wouldn't like it. Bottom line, their business - their rules, it's as simple as that.

In the one indoor range in this area that does allow lead, they keep the blowers howling, and you need a coat in there in July.

Most indoor ranges I've been to, it's the same way, either FMJ or plated. I thought that was the norm since its been like that for awhile around my area.

Makes me thankful that the great state of Arkansas is 10 years behind the times

Actually, the "lead free" idea is likely good for indoor ranges.

Check out http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/wp-sol...s/2010-113.pdf

Interesting thing about the OP, is FMJ is allowed, yet don't many of the FMJ bullets have an open bottom with the lead core exposed? And doesn’t the lead vapor mostly come from the bottom of the bullet, which is exposed to the hot gases, and also perhaps the primer compounds?

Our local bullet supplier's main business is making and selling reloaded ammo to the local indoor ranges.
Due to all the ranges' policy of no lead, they rarely even have lead bullets in stock anymore.
So far, the outdoor ranges still allow lead bullets.
Some day, lead bullets might go the way of lead fishing sinkers.

I can't shoot at an indoor range, too much lube smoke.

Only if the Greentards win. Some places they have (California).

I still use lead fishing sinkers, and lead cored bullets..... and will continue to do so, so long as they are available.

It will happen, same with lead free primers, it is on the horizon and it is just a matter of time.

If we all had that attitude, you would be right.... Perhaps in commifornia fake studies and people crying about things they dont even understand can get lead banned, but most of the rest of the country has more sense than that, thank god....

Not always and we are fighting back here in California. The indoor range I shoot at uses chopped up recycled tire berm as backstop and allow shooting of lead bullets. The ventilation works well and as soon as you shoot, the smoke moves down range.

More and more ranges are migrating to recycled tires as backstops and essentially traps all the bullets in their original form. Great idea that's win-win ... do some recycling of car tires and let us shoot lead ... then recycle all the bullets twice a year ...

pseudo-speciation is something children do when they're soldiers. It was never a good idea.

It looks downright silly on an adult.

It certainly doesn't reflect on the target.

You're talking about American Citizens, and an American state.

That doesn't appear to mean much to you, and that looks bad, too.

Lead bullets can cause cleanup complications for the range, but they don't hurt the shooters much. The primary lead exposure to shooters from shooting comes from lead compounds in the primers that are inhaled with the discharge smoke, not from the actual bullets themselves.

As far as the range cleanup issues, even plating or jacketing doesn't really help much unless the backstop is a soft style bullet stop. The hard backstops will usually break up the bullet and expose lead even if the bullets are plated or jacketed.

This is likely the real reason for the prohibition. The lube from lead bullets does generate more smoke and that can become a problem for an indoor range--especially one with inadequate ventilation.
