Optic for R700P?

Hey gang!

Well I'm looking into getting one of my dream rifles soon: a Remington 700 Police 26" bbl in .308 Winchester.

Naturally, I need an optic for this thing though!

So... I'm not that well versed on rifle scopes. Most of the shooting I do is with iron sights on my other weapons. I do know the basics of scopes, but haven't much personal shooting time with them. I know the Remington 700 police is used by many police sharposhooters... and I've also heard that they generally are not shooting from very far compared to military snipers for instance.

So I am buying this gun mainly as a fun/recreational target shooting range gun. Also, I am wanting an optic to be what a real Law Enforcement sharpshooter would be using. What scopes do these professionals tend to use on there Remington 700Ps? I'd imagine not something with too much magnification since most shots won't be farther than 200 yards?

So yeah... basically what would be a good scope for a Remington 700P that is actually used by the various departments that issue this rifle? Also what would be a good set of rings for said scope?

I am not wanting to spend more than $600 but am willing to budge if need be.

Thanks guys!

My agency uses Leupold Mk 4's bit over your budget. They used to use Vari-x III I think. You'll find a wide wide range of scopes on police sharpshooter rifles depending on the size budget and needs of that particular agency. That being said there are plenty of leupold's in your budget that would be comparable performance wise. The 3-9 or 4-12 mark ar would be a good fit and have a mildot. Some scopes in the Vortex line may work for you as well. I forget what the Weaver tactical scope is going for.

I think the 4-12 mark ar would be a good bet. Good range of magnification, it's a leupold, target turrets, mildot, and has an adjustable objective. Also leaves you a hundred bucks to get some good rings

I started with the 700LTR Which is a 20" barrel 700P. The scope was a 4-14x40 with a low 1 piece iron bragade armory mount. Used for target shooting 200 yards. Change the scope to a Bushnell 4200 series 6-24 x40. For target shooting, now I would go Weaver 36 fixed power.

I have a Nikon Monarch 4-16x50mm on my 308 Winchester caliber model Remington 700VS. It shoots tiny groups out to 600 yards.

"...what a real Law Enforcement sharpshooter would be using"

Badger or Nightforce rail and rings, US optics, Schmidt-Bender, or Nightforce NXS Scope. $600.00 is not going to get it done.

The Leupold MK 4 4.5-14x40 is probably one of the more common scopes used by LE on a rifle like the 700P. Unfortunately its a bit over your budget. The Burris MTAC 4.5-14x42 would fill the bill nicely. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/935...ProductFinding

Talley mounts are what I would use- http://www.talleymanufacturing.com/P...40X-(Med).aspx

You will get many other opinions and there are a lot of great choices out there in your price range. This setup is just my preference. Spend what you can afford and don't worry about it. I don't abide by the "rule" that the scope needs to cost 2x what the rifle does.

Look into the Vortex line.

Ive got one of their 6-24x on my FN special police and its a GREAT scope at a reasonable price point
