When I think "big, heavy 9mm," my mind goes straight to 3rd gen S&Ws. Probably not the biggest, or the heaviest, but I still think they're cool.

5904 and 5906 are on my list of possible buys.
CZ and Beretta are still at the top, but 5906 isnt far behind.

I've tried many, but always end up going back to my Glock 17.

I know it's not an all-metal option, but the Canik TP9SF series--particularly the SFx is a pretty solid choice. It's heavy enough, decently cheap (around $550), reliable, and full-sized. Plus, it's got some pretty cool features. The gun's very well-priced. And if you don't want the extra premium stuff, you can find a TP9SF for around $150 bucks cheaper.

I like this line of guns

Big, heavy/solid 9mm with DA/SA trigger...

CZ 75 (I have a pre B). Love it.
Beretta 92FS.
Sig P226.
You can get new, or used.

S&W 3rd Gen, especially 5906. Stout, stainless beast.
Star 30M- not stainless. Feels possibly more massive than the S&W. Very smooth slide. Kinda makes 9mm feel like a 22lr.
Daewoo DP 51; a bit smaller, with an aluminum frame so it's lighter too. Can buy it new as the Lionheart LH9, or used as the Daewoo. Mine's a tack driver.

CZ (Zastava) 99 (999, etc). Highly underrated gun, people love to make fun of them, but they're easy as hell to shoot great. My experience mirrors Hickok's, watch his review. He joked about it awhile, and then finally conceded it was a great shooter, and the gun you shoot best might not be the gun you like best.

I'd take a look also at the Arex Rex Zero and Rex Alpha.
There is also a Turkish Browning Hi Power clone but I can't remember the manufacturer. Girsan and Sarsilmaz make some good inexpensive Beretta 92 and CZ 75 clones.

Recently looked at a Jericho 941.

Certainly big and heavy, feels nice in the hand too.

I recommended a CZ-75 to a friend many years ago and he loves it and still uses it to this day. I had a S&W 915 I just gave to my son and those sell for a little less than most S&Ws because of matt finish on the metal. But nothing wrong with how they shoot.

But I'm curious, what was it about the SD9 you didn't like? I just bought a new one a few months ago and I haven't shot yet and have an older SW9 that has been a flawless shooter for me. Its decently accurate and never ever fails in any way.

That's a good advice.

I like the SD9 well enough to keep it, is like a Honda Civic, it does everything pretty well but nothing exceptionally well. I have the Apex trigger spring kit in it and that greatly improved trigger pull. And, it's FDE with a black slide so doesn't look bad, and I have 7 mags for it so...will likely keep it. It's been 100% reliable so I don't have any performance issues with it.
But...I've just started shooting steels at an outdoor range, and my shooting buddies are shooting an STI Staccato XC, and Sig P320 X-Five Legion, and ported Performance Center M&P...so I'm looking for something a little heavier, faster, and better than the SD9. The best I can afford right now is something like the CZ Sp-01 Shadow or Beretta 92X Performance. I've checked Tanfoglia and other brands, but I want something that I can get mags for easily and has good aftermarket support.

OK that helps. I didn't know if the gun was unreliable or inaccurate and you weren't getting the hits like you wanted. If I were looking for what you wanted I would still go with the CZ-75 and never look back. Good solid guns.

The OP said "big, heavy, 9mm". S&W 6906, all-metal 9mm.

DA/SA, pretty smooth DA stacking if just like my S&W 5906.

Extremely reliable and quality/ruggedness on par with the best Czech, German, Belgian handguns.

I too wanted a big heavy 9mm. I went with the Sig P320 X5 Legion. It's big. It's heavy. It has a light trigger. Adjustable sights and a flared magwell. I have only had it a few days but I think it may replace my Glock 34 for my competition gun.

CZ for all things except I found a Star Mod 31 M1 at a local pawn shop I'd love to own. Heavy all steel pistol with 15 round mag...love the look, feel and trigger.

Ruger P-85 or P-89 should work. Love my P-85 and am partial to the older model Rugers for weight and balance. Mine are also the decocker models.

I owned a Beretta SS 92. Great accuracy, no recoil, easy takedown and cleaning.

I've owned all the guns you listed. I've sold all of them. I realized I just didn't need such a heavy 9mm. My guess is, it's not the heavy weight you liked, it was the ergonomics and the trigger. My advice would be: don't chase heavy weight, chase ergonomics and good triggers. Your S&W is a low end pistol (no offense). There are other pistols of similar weight that will be MUCH more shootable... while also being portable and packable.

But, if you wanted my opinion on heavy pistols, the CZ SP01 is the best of the ones you mentioned because it retains the classic CZ low bore axis, so you actually get some benefit from the heavier weight. It is a VERY low recoil pistol.

I’d go with a CZ 75 SP-01, I’d change out the sights for the CZ Custom F.O. front & battlesight rear. Because of the way this sight hangs off of the back of the slide, I’d also replace the stock ring hammer with the CZ Custom race hammer. I have this on my 75B, and it’s great. I like some of the stock 75 SP-01 triggers I’ve encountered. You might be able to live with the trigger as is, but there are some CZ Custom or CGW options to consider if you want to work the trigger.
