How quiet is a suppressed .40 vs .45?

I'm just wondering between the two calibers, I know standard pressure .45 is subsonic, but the 180 grain .40 loads usually are as well. Does that mean that they'll be equally as quiet when suppressed or no?

I ask because I'm looking at getting either a Glock 21 or a Glock 40 (leaning 40 for 10mm and capacity increase) and I'm thinking that with low power 10mm, it would be subsonic and hopefully as quiet as .45 is. If the .40 caliber can be or is, I have no interest in a .45 pistol.

I'm not interested in 9mm being suppressed, 147 grain is weak compared to .40 and .45.

I got a 45 can so i could run 9,40&45 thru it. The 40 was HORRIBLE. So much port blast that i was getting stung and peppered with every shot.

I dont even have threaded barrels in my 40cal pistols anymore. ALL my 9’s and 45 have threaded barrels.

Most .45 is subsonic by nature. Alternately, most .40 is high pressure and fast. You can buy subsonic .40 but it’s generally easier to rock .45 suppressed.

A 180 grain .40 S&W at 1000 fps is considered fast? That's still subsonic though, right?

You’re right in the range of supersonic in the 1000’s and not every round, even quality factory loads, is going to fire at the exact same speed so in that range you could end up with a few rounds out of the bunch going supersonic. There’s nothing wrong with .40 if you get the load right and you’ll still have the added capacity. The .45 just makes ammo selection a little easier. Otherwise it’s pretty much your preference what you like.

^Alright.

Let's say that instead of a 180 grain .40 S&W, how about a 200 grain 10mm Auto handloaded to around 900 fps?

As long as the 10mm loaded down still cycles you won’t hear much difference. If I were only going to do one I would personally just go .45 because it’s easy and I don’t load my own ammo. If you’re handy that way you have a whole lot of options to play with.
