I s agunsmith required to add spring detent to 870 barrel?
I just received a spring and detent ball from Numrich for my 870 Express barrel. Will I need to have this installed by a gunsmith, or is this something which can be installed without any special tools/skills? I am pretty handy, but I am looking at this wondering how it stays in place? Is there some odd "staking" tool which I would need to do this? Is there some "thing-a-ma-jig" I can make to install this?

You can peen over the edges of the hole for the detent ball.
Use something like a hard drift punch or drill rod. |

Brownell's sell a special punch that puts in the factory-type staking to retain the detent, but still allows it full range movement.
http://brownells.com 870 Detent Staking Punch. #080-870-205. $14.97. This special punch has a cut-away tip that stakes the detent, but doesn't force metal into the inner side of the ring. Without the punch, metal is pushed into the inner side of the ring, and the ring won't slip over the magazine tube. |
