Changes in Remington 870 short barrels
I just received a Remington 870 Express barrel directly from Remington.
I ordered the part as an extra barrel to to play with site modifications. A while back someone said the had a 870 Marine Magnum that the barrel was flush with the magazine. This appeared to be a change from the old barrel lengths. The barrel I just received was suppose to be for the 870 express short barrel model, yet, it is about .5 inches longer. I havent installed it yet, but it appears to be longer than flush. Remington may have tooled the barrel making equiptment differently for some reason, If this is soo, once the old stock of 870 Marine Magnims and Express short barrels are depleted their might only be these longer barrels used on newer guns leaving the factory. To clarify, the orignal Express barrel that came with the 870 Im speaking of is slightly over 18 inches. The new barrel that arrived is 18.5 inches. I dont have a digital camera so I cant geta picture just yet. This barrel matches what UKMed06 barrel length looks like on the 10th post down of this thread. Be sure to click on the JPG on that post to see what im talking about. http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/...=marine+magnum |

Apparently, new for 2006, Remington has gone with the Improved Cylinder choke for all short shotguns.
In the past, the Police guns were Improved Cylinder, and the Express short barreled guns were Open Cylinder. So, it appears that Remington short barrels will now be 18 1/2 inches long with Improved Cylinder chokes. |

My new 870P came with a 18.5" long (measured while installed in the action with the bolt closed) IC choked barrel. The barrel ends flush with the Remington +2 mag ext.

Maybe I am just a dim bulb but I can't see what difference 1/2 inch makes or why it is worth a long complaint.

No complaint. Im very happy with my new 18.5 inch barrel..
I do wonder if they did this to standardize short barrel production. Theres probably some manufacturing reason. |

Probably so that the BATF agent with the worn measuring device won't find it 1/32" short.
