I hope this isn't asking for too many in my first post here, and I apologize if asking about S&W autos in this subforum is verboten. ...But I'm asking if you would be kind enough to help date my 3rd gen auto roster:

Model 908: UBZ0xxx
Model 3913: TEM2xxx
Model 5904: THC6xxx
Model 5904: TYC9xxx
Model 5904: TFR9xxx
Model 4013: TVF7xxx
Model 4006: TFM7xxx
Model 410: VHN6xxx
Model 4506: TVB2xxx

Thanks so much.

Serial Number help Please

Hi All,

First post here, I'm a Colt guy that ended up in the wrong neighborhood,,, and acquired a S&W 10-5 4" Blue wood grips in box all papers and wrapper today and have been trying to check serial numbers which isn't an easy task.

the gun is also what I think is referred to as a pinned barrel and is in factory New condition, as in only been fired at factory (not a novice here).

I have seen info on "D" serials but this is a 3D28*** so I'm lost here and could use some help

Also it's a tapered barrel

Crane says 45814 and then below that is F21

and THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP!

Thanks for the dates of manufacture!

Thank you for the information on the dates of manufacture. The .38 spl. built in 1956 looks brand new, my 15 yr old grandson and 17 yr. old granddaughter and i spent yesterday afternoon learning gun safety and shooting targets and sawblades starting with the single shot .22s. Later he put a few dozen wadcutters through his great-grandma's handgun.
My father bought the M29 new, I am the fourth son, he gave it to me before he went to be with his maker. It is nothing but fun to shoot.
Again thank you for the information.

Figured it out...

I just searched this thread a little more thoroughly and it looks like my S&W 10-6 was born between 1966 and 1967....

This is a great thread!

FYI for anyone with same type of serial number

CJW6xxx
4-2006.

what is interesting to me is that the 686-7 were 2004 and after.

so my 686-6 plus is 4-2006

SWSC help

I feel pretty ignorant. Can you help? I have the SWSC latest version. But I don't see where you get the SNs the way you do. In each model # section it gives done data TI help bracket years based on engineering changes etc. Where is the section that gives SN Ranges by model and year? Also can you give them for older models? I have a SW .32 Long Model of 1903 1st change SN 28424. Can you date this? Thx. Mike

1st and 3rd.

SN's ran from 19426 in 1904 to 51126 in 1906.

The serial numbers start on page 395. Only certain (later) models give the serial numbers by year, and even that is only approximate. The older models are only a date range. You would have to pay for a "letter" from S&W to get the ship date and other history by serial number.

If there is no letter prefix with that number, then around mid 1920's.

S&W 38 special

I am trying to age my late grandfather's pistol. It is a S&W .38 special. It has a V on it, and then separately it has 4417XX. Can anyone give me any general ideas for date range?

Yes.
The "C" prefix was used from 1948 to 1967.

.38 Military & Police "Victory" models were made during WWII. Yours would be around 1943.

SN's ran from C277555 in 1954 to C402923 in 1956.
It's a 38 Military & Police which became the Model 10 when S&W began assigning/stamping model numbers ~1957.
