What .40 cal load would you go with for self defense & why. ( I'm looking at Barnes Bullets.... )

I have a coupe of .40s but don't carry them. If I did, I'd probably go with the 150-165 gr just based on the ballistics. Any modern HP ammo would work fine for me, but my preference would be: Gloden Saber/PMC Starfire/Gold Dots/ and Ranger "T". Not necessarly in that order. They all get the job done.

I like the Gold dots as well, and I have heard good things about the federal hydra shocks

I carry the Winchester Ranger SXT JHP in 180gr variety. They should stop whoever I shoot at.

I think the original question is about rolling your own, right?
You might post here: http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/...isplay.php?f=9 or here: http://www.handloads.com/ For factory loads, I concur with JAXX on the Winchester Ranger in 180 grn.

The 155 grainers from barnes look decent. Good balance between velocity and expansion. I've been too nervous to try anything much lighter than that myself, even if they claim they don't fragment.

My carry ammo in my 40 is 135HPs. You don't need a heavy bullet with the power of the 40 to get penetration. I use the 135s for max expansion- and they work really good too.

I load my first magazine with 155gr JHP's, and the backup with 180gr FMJ. Should cover anything I'm likely to get myself into.

Anything on this list:
http://www.tacticalforums.com/cgi-bi...;f=78;t=000964 Because if this research is trusted by the FBI and police agencies all over the US, it's good enough for me. |
