New Colt Python 6”

I recently was at a LGS and they had about 10 of the new Pythons in all configurations, I was just really impressed with a 6” bright stainless so I just bought it. I had seen people on other forums talking about the flimsy rear sight which I discovered to be true, and I had trouble picking up the orange insert in front. I ordered the Wilson Combat replacement rear sight, a red fiber optic front sight, and a gold dot front. It was an easy install on the front and rear, and the fiber optic won out hands down over the gold dot. Great sight picture now and after shooting about 200 rounds through it I am happy with its performance. Double action is very smoothe with no stacking, while the single action is a little too heavy, but seemed to be starting to break better the more I shot. The biggest complaint I have is the heavily grooved trigger which I really don’t like, as I much prefer a smoothe face trigger for keeping less side pressure on trigger when pulling it. I have just been sitting around rubbing it down with Renaissance wax and polishing it with a towel. It is one beautiful chunk of metal for sure…

Highly polished stainless is beautiful on a pistol, but on the new Pythons and Anacondas it's super beautiful.

I appreciate your post. Now I need to step away from the computer for a while until the desire to get one of those beauties gets out of my mind.

Thanks. ; )

I'm glad you like your new Python. It's pleasing to hear.

That's interesting to hear. Pythons are known for stacking. At least the old ones. I'm not sure about the new ones.

I am the owner of a Python that I bought new in Aug 1983. I believe I once looked up the serial number and traced it to an '82 production. It's a 6" blue. It was my first firearm purchase and I still have it. It's in "96%" condition (IMO). Anyway, the trigger - although buttery smooth - stacks considerably. More so than any other revolver I own (all Smiths).

Who cares? Sorry, that's just a quip. I'm not being snide. I'm just a pure double-action guy. In 2013, I bought a Smith 686+ 3" bbl and never even checked the single action. One evening, sometime in 2015, it dawned on me that I never even checked the single action on it (I then did, and it worked ) I tell that story just to give a flavor of how I pretty much disregard single action.

I don't either. I'm a smooth trigger guy for sure.

I'm glad you like your Python. It's good to know that Colt is making them in the fine tradition that they deserve to be (save, the sights). I like mine. These days, it's a safe queen. I take it out for a shoot maybe once a year. Last time I shot it was on the 40th anniversary of my taking ownership of it (9/3/83 - 15-day wait period in Ca at the time). I didn't get it out this year (too cold now). It's always a pleasure to shoot. And although I came to prefer the feel of Smiths in my hand (and subsequently bought a lot of them), there will always be a soft spot for my Python. It's a beautifully crafted gun.

I just picked up a beautiful 4” stainless a few months ago and I too detest the serrated trigger. I sort of fixed it with a trigger shoe from a K frame Smith & Wesson that I had laying around in my parts box. It’s not a perfect fit but does work well. I ground the serrations off of it and ground a little off the top for a better fit. Then I reblued it so it’s not so bubba looking. I wished it was stainless to match but it’s not that bad looking. I did order an aluminum one for a Python but it was for the original and wouldn’t work at all on the new Python. I thought about ordering another one in aluminum like the K-frame size but didn’t want to throw anymore money at it since my steel blued version works just fine.

Good to hear that they apparently got the bad bugs worked out. My local shop got 7 of them when they first came out, a few years ago, and 5 of them had to be returned to the factory for issues, one of them was completely non functional, brand new in the box.

The other two were fine, and their owners were happy with what they got.

I've got three of them. All 4.25 inch, two stainless, one blue. Why two exactly alike? My wife wanted one of her own. I don't care if she never shoots it, if she wanted it, she got it.

I like the blue one best, but I just like blue guns. I shoot almost nothing but 38 wadcutters in it/them, but man they like that round. I'm old, and sort of decrepit, so I don't shoot long ranges. I'm happy with cutting the 10/X-ring out of a B-27 at 7-10 yards thse days. I know the guns can do better, but my old eyes and shaky hands can't.

The other one looks just like the top one. Only the S/N is different.

I've been a Smith and Wesson guy all my life, but these Pythons...well...they are pretty good."

I had a 6' one too. A very early one. The side plate screws came loose, but I just tightened them up and went back to shooting. I sold it when I found the 4.25 inch one pictured. I just have a thing for a 4 inchish barrel, but man that 6" one shot lights out.

I would point out, for those who don't know, but while they have a very similar look and the same name, the lockwork of the "new Pythons" is not the same as the original Pythons.

And one of the specific goals in designing the new lockwork was to eliminate stacking. From reports I have read and my own VERY limited exposure to the new Pythons, it appears they succeeded. It's one of the nicest, smoothest revolver triggers I've ever encountered.

CajunBass: Interesting that the blue one has three vent ribs. That's a nice touch, I think. So much so, that if I was in the market for one (I'm not), I'd have to get the blue.

It's funny you should say that. Most people seem to weap, moan, and gnash their teeth over the three slot vent rib. Apparently the two slot one is "traditional" for the 4" Python and Colt should have never put that ugly three slot rib on their gun...yada, yada, yada...

Personally, I didn't even notice the number of slots until I read about it on the internet. I was like, "You're kidding? That's a deal breaker?"

I kinda like the three slots myself, I really like blue guns so that might be it.

I have read that Colt has gone to two slots on the blue 4.2 Python now. True or not I have no idea. There is a used one, in the case at my LGS. I didn't notice how many slots on that one, now that I think of it. Looks like brand new. I've been tempted, but I've already got three. No need to be greedy I suppose. Of course, I could say it was for my wife.

i was at a LGS yesterday looking at the pythons they have and i asked the guy if i could look at a 4.2 and he got it out and then i asked if i could look at a 6 and he handed me what he thought was a six....i looked at it and said this is anouther 4...so he looked at the card in the case...it was a 5"....wow i didnt know they were making a 5....i always liked the way a 4.2 felt in my hand ...but the 5 is the one i think i want now...nice balance...good feel in my hand...i had to walk away to think on this for a while....now i cant get it out of my head

i will probably be headed back over there tomorrow and tell him to put it in a box

i was kinda surprised at the single action trigger pull...i know the lock works are different than the old ones but i wasnt expecting 4+ lbs...it was clean and crisp but nothing like the old ones....but then the new ones aint like the old ones...and i agree it would be nicer with a slick faced trigger

when i was younger i never could afford one and now i am at the age where i SHOULD be thinking of thinning the herd....not adding.....but i have always wanted a python....and i think it would be a nice pass down to my grand son....whose name by the way is Colt......so here we go...i see a snake in our future

lol....PaPaw

Yeah, I can see that. I was viewing it without the perspective of tradition at the time. I think I still like it though.

Not being a Python guy, tradition doesn't matter much to me. I like the 3 slot look better, personally. And since the purpose of the ventilated rib is to allow more surface area for air to cool, the 3 slot rib would be more efficient for that.

I just bought a 5" Python. I love it. 5" is my favorite, I also have 5" 629. It's the perfect size IMO.

See what happens? You get one and next thing you know. There are five or six of them.
