For those interested. I kept the gun and no ATF agents at the door. Since then I have bought another gun. In 20 minutes the NICS came back PROCEED.

Military and/or clearances -- per se -- have nothing to with it.

The only issue that may arise with military is an out-of-state driver's license/different residence
address that don't match up -- even when military/PCS orders are prseented to account for it.

As to simply more time to check not having to do with secret clearances. Well they would have to go to the agency to find out which would take more time.

As for that it would be on your criminal record if you violated your clearance? Well sometimes they don’t want any body to know about it and records are sealed.
Oh, so double dog dare top secret stuff, whereby if you break the law, it is so secret there is no prosecution. They just turn you loose, but they let you vote, just not buy guns? Really?

Having held a secret, top secret, and "Q" level clearances for a few decades, there are quite a few things that are not breaking any law that will get your clearance pulled.

The idea that one might commit a crime, and retain a clearance once the right branch of govt knows you are accused, is the stuff of bad fiction stories. People have had their clearances pulled for not reporting a traffic violation. (it wasn't the violation, but the failure to report it that got their clearance pulled)

One fellow I knew got his clearance pulled for going to the company provided therapist (aka "shrink") for marriage counseling!

He was, eventually, reinstated, but was in legal limbo for some months, as without a clearance he could not go to work, but was not fired, and so since he was not fired, was technically employed, so unemployment benefits were not available, but since he couldn't access his jobsite, and there, work, he didn't get paid.

The very first thing that normally happens when someone with a high level clearance does anything, or is accused of doing anything outside the strict clearance requirements, is the clearance is pulled and a separate investigation is run, independent of everything else.

Anything that may possibly make you a risk, or vulnerable to being exploited by "agents of a foreign power" or anyone else no matter how it is resolved, can get a clearance pulled. And, often has.

I don’t recall having to report traffic violations but I only had a secret clearance. I did report going to a psychiatrist for depression. But turned out that was from sleep apnea, so my clearance was reapproved.
