28 gauge double

Hey all, does anyone have experience / comments on the 28 gauge ? This will be a farm gun for target and or small game.

Great guns. Lighter and more nimble than a 20, 16, or 12. You lose some punch, so just don't miss and don't try to kill a snow goose 80 yards away. I'll have a 28 O/U before long.

They are great little guns but the shells are expensive. If you reload it's not so bad but if you don't you might consider a 20 ga.

28's are delightful little doubles and require a fairly-high level of skill to be successful with them. They also tend to be rather expensive. Just in general, I think you might be better served by a 20-gauge for an all-around shotgun.

28ga is a great gun - for skeet - and in the field for quail, etc. I have a Browning over/under 30" barrels built on a 20ga receiver - very nice gun. I reload 28ga so the cost of shells is not a factor for me.

Heck, get a 12 o/u, then tubes for 28 and two guns in one. Actually 4 if you wish to also buy 20 and 410 tubes/inserts.......................ck

28 GA is the perfect gauge. It will be perfect for farm use where most of your shooting will be small animals and birds. Great gun for pest control and far superior to the often touted 410 bore.

28 throws excellent patterns. Skeet shooters often shoot better with the 28 than with the 20.

Almost no recoil and a great gun to teach youngsters. If your squeeze doesn't like the recoil of a 12 the 28 is perfect.

Ammo is expensive, about the same cost as the 410. But reloading is cheaper for the 28 as you use less shot and powder than the 20 or 12. And the most common powders are Unique and PB which are cheap if bought in bulk. (And can do double duty for handgun calibers).

Stick with an O/U or SXS so you cab easily retain the hulls. Even if you do not reload the hulls are a hot commodity and often can be sold to other shooters.

Check out the newer Turkish doubles, especially the SXS. They are quite nice and well made.
