Who makes a good Chronograph?
Model? Make? features to be savored?
I was looking in Cabela's catalog and they have one with a large opening. Thanks

Features worth having? Well a remote display is good, that way you can hide the chrono behind a steel plate, just in case...
I have a chrony F1 master. I made my own remote for it, which enables me to see all the data rather than just the speed of the last shot. |

Yeah, I've got a Chrony Master Alpha. It's a good simple unit that gives me all the info I need. I like the remote. After a string I can scroll through and copy down individual shots, average velocity, exteme spread, and standard deviation. Only problem I have had is in cold weather (below 32'F), the display will act up. It came with two sizes of openings, but I've always used the small one with the light defusers, cloudy or sunny. Found a light fixture for it on sale at Midway, so this winter I've been using it indoors, too.
Cool thing about Chrony is if something ever happens to it they'll give you a generous trade-in allowance. Fact is, I got this one for under $75 four years ago by sending in a shot-up unit somebody gave me as junk. Could I live without it? Sure. But reloading is more fun with it. |

Chronographs
I would consider the Ohler the best. I would consider the Chrony Master the best buy. I just sent my Chrony Alpha Master in for an upgrade to a Gamma master. $45 for the upgrade. I wouldn't but this summer it looks like I will be helping the local gun shop with some of his reload work. I already have the printer. For the back yard shooting junkie I would consider the Alpha master as a good bet. If you decide you want more features later you can upgrade to a higher end model for not much money. $35 to go to Beta and 45 to go to Gamma. Software and cables are available to dump the data into a PC spreadsheet and/or ballistics program.

Chrony is the least expensive but it works.
I have used two different Oehlers, a PACT, and bought my own CED. And have shot over Prochronos at IDPA and IPSC matches. Read the catalogs and buy on features and price, they will all give you good velocity readings. |

same (old) advice
Highly recommend the kind that offer separate brain from screens, because you will shoot the thing.

Pro Chrono digital by Competion Electronics. It comes as one unit, brains and all, but this model is good enough that you don't have to aim down low close to the sensors to get a reading with hot .22 centerfires. Aim up high, no problem. It's small, easy to transport and has a great electronic memory that stores 9 different shot strings that you can bring home and analyze if you like.
