Does anyone make a silencer for shotguns?

The 870 in particular. After shooting this in the range with headphones, I couldn't imagine shooting without them. Too loud. Also I can't believe how hard those 3" 00 & slugs recoil, ouch!

AWC or gemtech makes one. it requires a specially shortened barrel (even with the end of the magazine tube) and is about 10 inches long, and about the diameter of a 1 liter bottle.

it's pretty much designed for silent door busting, so there's no sights.

Vader, you mentioned "in" the range. Noise is quite magnified indoors and under roof (rain covers). When your outdoors and looking at feathers or fur, the noise is very secondary.

Same for recoil - off the bench or in a static shooting environment (shooting paper) you really feel the kick. Get an active target and your concentration on hitting puts the recoil out of your mind.

Most of us old guys have abandoned the 3 inch shells BTW.

Serious answer:

If you wear proper hearing protection then it isn't bad at all. Most centerfire rifles are a lot louder.

Before you can purchase a suppresor you have to jump through a lot of BATF hoops and pay a $200 tax.

Schmit, I like to do 400 rounds through my .338 NEF handi rifle daily. I usually do this during my breaks at Mall Security HQ. No pain whatsoever, but that is due to my intense training.

A strict regimine of 75 super magnum turkey loads will help you develop the stamina you require. The callous on your shoulder will be the size of a football, but it's worth it, even if you have to buy all new shirts in XXL.

Vader, some suggestions....

The Archives here have tons of stuff, including comparing 2 3/4 and 3" loads, handling kick and so on. Use the Search feature and be ready for truckloads of info. This is THE place to go for shotgun info.

Also, if you're shooting in an enclosed space, use BOTH plugs and muffs.Trust me on this, it'll help settle you in.

If all the deer I've shot deadernH*ll with dinky little 2 3/4" slugs, including the old 7/8 oz, 1250 FPS jobs were lined up end to end, they'd reach from here to Clarksville. All 3" slugs do that the shorter ones don't is give you a flinch faster and go through your money.

For practice, and familiarization, use generic field loads, preferably the 1 oz Lites.

Finally, I use a wearable recoil pad, the PAST for bench work with anything kicking harder than a 22 Hornet. It's a little binding for wingshooting, but I never feel kick there anyway.

Your intense trianing... BS. When you combine the weight of the rifle with the AimPoint, the Night Vision Scope, Surefire Flashlight, InfraRed Laser Designation Module, Laser, Buttcuff with extra rounds, Bi-Pod, Bayonet Attachment & Bayonet and Vertical Foregrip, the thing has got to weigh close to 30 lbs. That soaks up alot of recoil.

It is one sweeeeeeeeeet weapon though!!!!!... wish our Mall Security had them.

Thanks for all the replies guys. My concern is if I had to fire it indoors, I wouldn't want to make everyone deaf. I searched on silencers before I posted, but came up empty.
Sub sonic loads sound nice. I have to see if someone makes those.
