fast burning powders for use in 9mm minor

when looking for a powder for your desired load you want these things of course:

1. low smoke emission
2. low muzzle flash
3. clean burning
4. small charge required allowing for lots of loaded cartridges per pound of powder
5. maximal bullet velocity/ minimal felt recoil
6. consistent operation: both in metering out the powder drop and also when propelling your bullets out the barrel

i have been doing some uspsa and idpa with an xdm9 and so far have tried out hs-6, unique, universal, bullseye and now ive tried some titegroup

as of now im pretty sure i like titegroup the best though the differences arent huge with most of these powders.

im not sure how readily i will be able to get titegroup powder but ive regularly seen some other powders at the store that i was curious about:

looking at this powder burn rate chart i would assume that most if all faster burning powders would work fine for 9mm minor....(?)

http://www.reloadbench.com/burn.html

tell me what you know about any of these powders listed below, if you have experience using them for 9mm minor or if you have any links that you might be able to provide me that might have data for these powders in 9mm minor.

TiteWad
Red Dot
accurate #2
Clays (Hodgdon)
WST (Winchester)

this is my setup at the moment and would more or less like to keep the same PF but other stuff i might change

xdm9 4.5'' barrel
124g round nose fmj (.590'')
1.12-1.125 col
4.3g Titegroup
1090fps avg./135pf

i really just want to get settled in and use the same stuff over and over and not change anything but you never know when your supply of something will not be there when you need it and then you will have to use something else.

thanks.

I use Titegroup up to 124 and Blue DOT for 147.
Used in Sig 228, PPS, and BHP
Titegroup is more cost effective, and a great powder.

Titewad is NOT recommended for handgun rounds. It's listed as solely for shotgun on the Hodgdon web-site.

I use a LOT of Clays in .40 S&W. Low charge weight, clean, little smoke with lead bullets. Came into it by accident but have been very pleased with it. It works good in 38 Special also.

I have a friend loading 4.5 grains of Universal with Berrys 124 grain plated bullets in his 9mm XDm. Incredibly accurate. Clean burning. Shoots to point of aim. Universal seems to be pretty available also.

All the Best,
D. White

Is this a recent change? The 1Lb jug of Titegroup I have been working on for quite a few months has pistol loads on its label...

I use it for 9mm and .45acp.

I agree with this - been using Universal for years after I once ran out of Unique. Also does a great job job 38 and 32 SWL

Dave R,

TiteWAD is not TiteGROUP. Big difference.

Clays and Universal Clays both work very well for minor. My preference is for Universal because it can't be double charged in a progressive press and it has a nice feel to the load.

Hodgdon naming is unfortunate though and is confusing.

Clays is ADI AS30N and Universal Clays is ADI AP70N.

Data can be found on the ADI website. www.adi-limited.com/handloaders-guide. They are a Thales group company that manufactures these powders in Australia.

If you change #5 to "meets PF and has the lowest percieved recoil", you don't have the correct powder choice in your list. What you want is 3.1gr of VV n310 with a berry's 147 loaded to 1.160".

W231 comes to mind. Winchester has a new powder out called Auto Comp. Never had any luck with Unique metering worth a dam. Glad I used up the 8# keg. I personally have been using Titegroup.

Fast Burning Powders for 9mm

I've been using Red Dot with good success. 4-4.3 grains in a WIN case under a 115 grain FMJ with a CCI 500, 1.150"LOA. Works flawlessly in my M&P9c. Burns with minimal residue on the cases.
