If you're looking for something comfortable to shoot for yourself and the wife, I'm a big fan of the Bersa Thunder Plus .380 with 15 rd capacity for people who want a near full size pistol with the higher capacities, but low recoil. The Bersa's are well made and the price new if you buy online is under $300.

The Star’s are great pistols for a weapon that you would like to put a lot of ammo through, made of steel and a proven design they just shoot and shoot. The current crop of BM pistols seem to be mostly wear on the outside and little on the inside from shooting. Most Spanish pistol owners know dry firing without something to cushion the firing pin blow, one forum member makes the pins to fit a particular slide.

I like the BM, but don't forget that getting a spare magazine for it can be difficult. They also have the 92F for $329. And mags for them are cheap and plentiful.

Comparing a BM and 92s for carry purposes should recognize the BM is smaller, thinner, heavier and very easy to grip, point and fire with great sights. The 92s on the other hand is much larger, a third wider, lighter (aluminum frame) big fat grip containing magazine with twice the ammo and tiny sights.

I've owned some iteration of all of these (a Beretta 92FS, a S&W 5903, and a Star Modelo Super - still have the Beretta and S&W).

For a range toy, unquestionably the S&W 5906. Its a little heavy for carry, but other than that they're great guns.

Got my Star BM for about $220 (plus grade cost). Added these neat grips and two extra magazines. This thing is really a great shooter.

Several folks have mentioned that it is not a good idea to dry fire this gun without a quality snap cap like A-Zoom. You can damage the firing pin.

Does the double load of ammo make up for the lighter weight of the alloy frame on the 92s? Nobody cares too much how much it weighs if you have to drag iron (or alloy) and use it -- it's the weight hanging off your belt all day, every day, that's the major concern about weight. How much does each weigh with a full magazine aboard?

Trooper Joe, You have dressed up your BM with those grips and no matter how outspoken I may be about the piles of crap that CAI choose to engrave on the side of that pistol it will still provide you with many thousands of rounds of shooting fun. I have a bunch of BM and BKM pistols and although I usually carry a Sig 938 the BM’s still get a workout at the range.

Got the grips with the gun from JG Sales. Think they were about $29.00 extra.

I have had several STAR pistols, currently own a BM, with 3 mags and walnut custom grips. ONLY problem - they are long gone, as is the STAR company. There are some parts available, and firing pins are among them, but they are a PITA to change out.
Having said that, the STAR BM is very accurate, and about 3/4" thick...hides very well. And that heavy steel soaks up recoil, makes it easy to stay on target.

I have NEVER had a bad STAR pistol.
