Both. I decide I want something, and save up the cash..... then, when I have the cash, I see something on sale, which may or may not be the thing I wanted in the first place, and I buy it.
I end up with some really good deals this way ...... $99 Mosin, already cleaned of Cosmoline, when I was saving for the $149 Mosin packed with goo..... $299 Yugo SKS went on sale for $199..... was saving for a $350 GP100 and a Colt MkIII showed up for $300 when I went to buy it....... |

There are times when I see something for an unbelievable price and buy it not because I need it now, but because I will need it sometime in the future. This pertains to ammo and reloading supplies and about as much as a impulse buy as I make anymore related to firearms. Guns, I generally research and plan after seeing or imagining a need. Shiny objects just don't attract my attention much anymore.

I am constanlty looking at guns, reading magazines, reading this forum and drooling over all the options. As a result I almost always have a list at least 3 or 4 guns long that I am absolutely sure I need to own next (and yes they are in order of importance)
If I expand that list to what I want it's really too long to discuss. So-No impulse buying for me, when I get the cash it's already spent. Top 4 right now: .44 S&W with a 4 inch barrel, 1911 .45 (open to several different manufacturers), S&W Model 36 .38 snubbie, HD Shotgun (project gun) |

I sort of have in my mind things that I would like to acquire and I generally purchase the item I want the most. However, I think you also have to be aware of potential changes and considering what may not be available in the future.
For instance I really want a higher end 1911, but also would like a new AR15. My finances would not allow me to purchase both, and although I really would have preferred the 1911 I went for the AR15. While some might call this panic buying I have no doubt that at least for the near future these items will be more difficult to find and more expensive.

Some I plan ahead for but most are impulse. I go browsing and something, usually used in great condition, turns up and comes home with me.

Both. I wanted an Hk MR556 for a while. I bought it on Friday. Believe it or not this isn't the impulse buy. I went to pick it up before the shooting hit the news. While on my way there (2.5 hour trip) I heard about it. I bought an extra 5200 rounds of various ammo while I was there... The ammo was my impulse buy. They had 1000 round boxes of Federal XM193 for just over $300, so I bought all they had left.... I normally don't buy into any of the hype, but I think there will be some backlash from this one...

I do a big mix of both. If I'm at the LGS and I see something I want to hold...and it's in my hand for a minute and I like the way it feels. It comes home with me.
If I "need" something (now it's a 4' 1911) I plan on it. I had a dream last night, I was playing with a SIG P220...I have always wanted that gun. So I'm getting that too. Keep updated on my signature. I'm sure I'll have them soon enough (next few months) when my Colt is back from the smith. |

I agree, both works for me. When his speech was on last night I grabed the laptop and ordered some mags for a gun I dont even have yet just as he finished the speech. I know I will get this gun some time in the future but the mags will be the hard to find/expensive items.

Yeah..I don't even like saying the name either. I did a similar thing..with some AR mags. I get paid this week thankfully and I'm on vacation next week. Gotta hit some LGS around the city for some "planned" purchases. |

Before the election since I felt the Kenyan Socialist was going to win I started accumulating a pile of standard capacity Glock 19 magazines, buying one or two when I could. I wish I had bought more. That time is gone, every place in town is completely sold out of all Glock magazines that hold more than ten rounds.

My focus is more on caliber than anything else. It would be too expensive to keep 8 or 10 calibers stocked.
So I plan ahead by focusing on caliber and then impulse buy within that caliber. |

Yes. I impulse buy more than I'd like to. But I also plan ahead, like looking for a nickel CZ 83. Or a PMR-30 once they mature.

Very seldom on the impulse buy.I have my "bucket list" guns and they are scooped up whenever I come across them for the right price.

I think I'm an impulse buyer. If I see something that suits my fancy I buy it.
Seldom to I start out to buy a certain gun related item.

Question for impulse buyers: How do you prevent being buried alive in the results of your impulse purchases?
If my question is stupid, that's a valid response. I summon all my ability to resist a purchase, and I still wind up with more than perfect hindsight would allow.

The "perfect world" that is weapons is that they hold their value so well to the new breed of gun owner. You know those who are willing to save $20 over retail ...
So if you impulse buy and it doesn't work out, resell it and move on. Its almost like a gun lease ... |

I keep a list of guns that I want. When I go to gun shows I morally take more money than I really need just in case I find one on the list. I go with the knowledge of what each is worth and ready to buy if I see one.
Several months ago I purchased the gun that’s been on that list for over 30 years. Specific model, caliber and barrel length. I paid more than what it was worth (not a lot) but how much longer before another comes my way and how much will the price increase in that time? Yes I do buy spur of the moment guns but they are few and far between. I try to keep up to date on most guns that I would be interested in and hope to be able to tell what a good/bad deal is. As far as ammo, type ? Anything 44 special. Older Hi power, WWII 1911A1, New in the box S&W 5 inch 27, S&W four inch 696, S&W 25-5 Effector, there are more but you get the idea.

Left unsupervised I might impulse buy more often, but I am married. That said I did just order a couple 14 round 40 and 20 round 308 mags...just cause

I am, by nature, a fairly impulsive fellow. That edge is blunted by a lack of "fun money" to feed an impulse buy.
So all my gun related purchases are planned, boring affairs. . |
