Price of 243 ammo affected by recent panic?
I tend to purchase all my ammo in bulk, so the last time I purchased any 100gr 243 (winchester super x) was 5 years ago. I don't recall what I paid then, but I found some for .99 per round delivered. I realize most calibers have really jumped lately, just not sure about 243.

Five years? Even without the panic, prices overall are way up. "Normal" inflation.
It's a compound-interest problem. Even at just 5% per year inflation rate, prices would be up about 28% in five years. |

Some store are price gouging but most are the same price if you can find it in stock. Most of the local retailers are limiting the amount you can purchase to try and spread the limited amount they are getting in. To prevent mad rushes the local Academy store was signing people up when a truck was coming in and allowed the people into the store two to three at a time every five minutes about a half hour before it opened. You were allowed at that time five boxes or one bulk item of the popular ammunition ie .223, 7.62x39, .308, 9mm, .40, and .45. One of the stores that is price gouging had two employees who were first through the door, they came out of the store with an AR-15 each and two shopping carts full of ammunition. I was looking for .22 lr rimfire for my daughter's Sig and they had cleaned out every rimfire cartridge except the birdshot.

Here in MI .243 has stayed the same. I just got a box last week and it was the same price that it was before the panic.

I paid a little over $18 for 20 rnds at Walmart last week in NC. I put it next to a box that had Farm and Fleet sticker from about 20 years ago that said $7.95. I remember how expensive I thought that was.

Winchester "grey box" 100 grainers here at the walmart two weeks ago were $18.99+ tax, so yeah twenty or so bucks.
We load our own here using 100 grain Sierra Gamekings, they shoot a lot better..

The only rifle ammo my local Walmart had was 243 priced at $17. They had ni pistol ammo except a 20 round box of Federal 10mm for $38, that is about $80 for a regular box of 50 rounds.

I think ammo is way up across the board...or at least it is in my area. Even before this last rush it was up considerably from just a few years ago.

My local walmart is sold out of everything except 22 short and a few shotgun shells. Online discounters are out of all bulk ammo. I should have plenty of ammo to make it through this hoarding phase but I'm eager for prices to come back down and shelves to fill back up. --Jerry

Just a few years ago, .45 ACP was in short supply and was costing $48 a box in KTP, Kittery, ME. They were limiting people to one box, I believe.
Before the recent shootings, it was down to about $26 a box. I recently took my electric pot and molds out and began using up some of the lead I'd been saving. With my 6-cavity mold, I managed to cast about 600 bullets one day. |

I have seen the .243 (100 Grain) ammo online for $20.69 at Midsouth. I did see some at Wal-Mart weeks ago.
The nice lady at Wal-Mart told me yesterday that just before I got there they had just sold out of .22 CAL. Rim fire Ammo. She says there was a 3 box per person limit and it is wiped out as soon as the manager puts it on the shelf. Myself I am not in no panic mode on any ammo right now. The ammo that I don't load of course would be .22 Rim fire and 12 GA. ammo. For the past few years I casually bought a brick or case of that ammo from time to time. Since I load my own centerfire ammo and built up a decent supply of components I am good to go for a long time. |
